I took a spill yesterday and smashed the shifter pretty good, and (I think) bending the bottom lever. It shifts inward fine, catching and engaging, but does not retract back. Is there a spring somewhere? It’s a Shimano Deore 1×12 if that helps.

Think of pod shifters like these as a stack of pancakes with a threaded rod in the middle. Damage can compress the stack and add extra tension that the springs inside cannot overcome.
That bolt in the middle with the prongs bent up securing the position is the threaded rod. You can try to bend back the prongs and then back out the nut a small amount to add a little extra space to the stack. Then bend the prongs back. Doing so will result in extra play on that shift lever and it will wiggle a bit once it’s all rebuilt. Whether that’s acceptable is up to you.
The above might work but the impact may have also damaged or broken something in there. So your best bet would be to replace the shifter, but worth a try first.
