I bought this second hand road bike and have been riding it for a few weeks. It is working fine, all gears, and I’ve been able to do up to 17 miles on it at 14-15mph. Would it be able to handle 30 miles at 13-15mph in one day? I want to join a road cycling club who do a 30 mile route every Saturday but I’m concerned this bike, given that it’s quite an old model and also second hand, won’t be able to handle that distance? I don’t want it to break down on me and then inconvenience the people I’m cycling with.

Yes, that will be fine! Make sure you take a kit with you in case you run a flat tire. But yes!

    edit: typo

With some basic maintenance that bike will be able to handle any distance you throw at it. 3, 30, or 300miles, no problem. Second the suggestion to make sure you’ve got a spare tube and tools to change a flat.

  3. My concern is…. how does it fit you? If you have the seat bottomed out, but are getting proper leg extension, that frame is too large.

Poor fit will be exacerbated over longer rides.

Cool bike! Little rust on the old pedals. I would make sure they spin well. If they are crunchy then a 30 mile ride might warrant getting a set of pedals. I would also check the stopping power from speed to make sure the pads haven’t hardened. Brake pads and pedals are not much $ to replace and a good investment. It would be helpful if you posted a drive side out photo so we could see the drivetrain spec and condition. Zooming in from this side it seems to be either fresh or at least well kept. Check to see if the chain needs lube. I clean and lube mine about every 8 rides.
