Finger tightened lock ring to check thread direction, went to make a cuppa and came back to my kid holding the wrench telling me it’s tightened!
Is there a tool I can buy or a trick I should know to stop the motor turning so I can back it off and put the chain ring back on!

Scredriver in a spindle hole?
Put a crank arm back on.
Do you have a socket type tool, or a spanner type?
If socket, I would try and impact gun it loose. The impulse should be enough to loosen it before the shaft spins
If spanner, try to get a narrow strap wrench on the splines.
