  1. 12 speed cassettes use freewheels that are also used for much smaller ones. So it will fit very likely. But we need more information on the hub/freewheel or the current cassette to figure out which one fits.

You can, by finding the suitable size front chainring for your riding style and terrain and then buying a 12 speed cassette, shifter & derailleur. Try to stick with the same brand to avoid replacing the bottom bracket (if you switch from Shimano to SRAM dub, you’ll need to replace your BB). Also, it’s important to measure your rear hub to see if can take a 12 speed cassette. Most old hubs can only get up to 11 speed cassette.

I’d recommend it for you first to figure out if it’s worth it. I recently converted my trail bike to 1×10 from 2×10 by removing the 29 tooth chain ring and replacing 38T ring with 34T. I think I will add an 11 speed derailleur, cassette and a shifter and leave it at that. I run an old shimano xt groupset. And the hub can only handle an 11 speed cassette. I hope this helps.

  3. My understanding is that when sram and shimano came out with the 12 speed cassette they also came out with new free hubs. I think you could upgrade to 11 speed without upgrading the free hub but going to 12 may not work.
