Hi there, I bought this Peugeot bike as a commuter about 8 months ago. It rode like a dream, until a few weeks ago the chain started slipping to the highest gear, and not sticking when shifted lower. Great down hill, tough uphill.
I took it to a local servicer who said it’s likely a chain and cassette issue. Now I’m looking to repair that, I’m wondering what I should offer for this- saw a Shimano Six Speed recommended on a previous post. But I’m completely new to biking and maintenance and looking for a second opinion. Thanks!

I’d wager money on the friction shifter on the downtube being the issue; simply tightening it so it has more friction, which holds the cable in the right place when you shift gear.
See the little loop on metal on the shifter? Turn that one-eighth of a turn until it stays in the right place when you shift gear
