I was shifting from the front large ring to the front small ring, while in a middle gear in the cassette. Wasn't cross chaining.

Did it happen when you backpedaled?
Your derailleur is probably not aligned correctly
That’s called chain-suck. Look for something on the teeth there that’s causing the chain to stick

Chainsuck can happen for various reasons like worn chain/chainring, lack or improper lubrication, poorly adjusted chainline, drivetrain, etc
Gunky chain and chainrings also.
