This is the front gear on a single speed bike, I don't have a spanner this small, I used a set of snap ring pliers to get it tight but I'm guessing it's not all that tight, especially since I didn't want to smoke a pricey set of pliers! Is it just a micro spanner or something? Amazon for quick delivery if anyone has a link, best maybe to buy a set as I'm sure I'll run into other situation for this on my bikes! TIA!

  2. Have you tried it without a wrench on back? In my experience, I can always get them loose or tight without that wrench.

    The only time a wrench has come into play is when the chainring bolt is slightly too long and the threads have bottomed out… In which case that’s the problem that needs to be solved — either with a shorter set of bolts, or little chainring spacers that are made to be used under the back side pieces.

    Yeah, I feel like I have them pretty tight. But the male part of the bolt does protrude past the part with the slot, so I couldn’t fake that last final snug with a screwdriver. I see the park tool is only $6 on Amazon, so I’m gonna grab that just to have in the kit! Thanks for the advice!

    If it’s spinning just enough I can’t get it to tighten I grab a butter knife from the kitchen and jam it on one half and it’s usually just enough to hold it in place to start tightening instead of spinning. You can also buy the special tool, or buy different parts altogether which actually fit a tool on either side.

    it’s hex6 or hex8, and a flat screwdriver with a 10 mm notch. if you have the power driver, you can try to a sudden hit to remove it. I think you want to remove it, right?

    And it’s better to install the hex head on the outer side. And don’t forget to use the grease on the bolt, and nuts and the surface between the nuts and crankset.

    plus: if you need spacer on the bolts, it’s d10mm*D12*h1.0, or d10*D14*h1.0, it’s always d10 mm, and 2 different size on outer size, 12 &14, the height can be 0.2, 0.3, 0.5 or 1.0 mm.
