Amtrak thruway bus

Can people share their experiences with this? How stressful is it getting your gear off and the bike stowed? My goal is to get to bar harbor to take the ferry to Nova Scotia. I’d be going from Boston to Portland then the bus. Another question I have is, Amtrak says they only accommodate trailers in a box. I’m imagining packing it in such a way it’s very similar to a large wheeled suitcase, which is allowed. Any thoughts?
I don’t know if I could carry what I need in panniers due to physical limitations.
Open to all suggestions, etc. I am trying to figure some way I can have a less limited more adventurous life, and I’m also very low income or I’d have all sorts of options.
