  1. The left hand shifter appears to be missing parts. You shouldn’t be able to see the cable and the white plastic internals like that.

    Usually, the left hand shifter controls the front derailleur/gears, and the right hand shifter controls the rear derailleur. In your case it appears to be reversed: your right hand shifter controls the front derailleur (so if you set it to 2, the chain should be on the middle chainring — but the pictures don’t allow us to verify that) and the left hand shifter the rear derailleur. I think the part with the numbers fell off.

  2. Looks like you have 3 gears at the front (chainrings) and 7 at the back (cogs on cassette). As has been mentioned, you are missing the cover on the left side gear shifter which tells you which gear you are in. You can try move it all the way up and down to see if it is shifting properly
