New or Old?

I’m sure like many of you, we’ve all been hankering over the latest and greats road bikes. For me that was a month ago when I decided my gravel 1x bike wasn’t cutting it for the hills of Austin. So like anybody I went down to the LBS and they had a brand new Trek Emonda SL 7 with Di2 shifting and all the bells and whistles. The original price was close to $6,000 but I got quoted at a clearance price ($3,600) due to the Madone taking up the new mantle. Now in my mind that’s a deal!

However, one thing that kept sitting in the back of my head was how much the depreciation of the bike was going to be. It was already depreciated by almost half of its original value, how much more would it go? And it was hard for me to justify spending that much money on a bike personally.

So I started to consider whether or not I should just upgrade my old Club Fuji. The bike was already bought by me for $200 a couple years ago, and brand new upgrades still wouldn’t even come close to the new bikes price. So how do y’all feel about the prices now and how much money we eat when getting into and upgrading in this hobby?
