I have an XD hub that was working perfectly with a GX 12 speed cassette. I’m using a GX 11 speed cassette now, but it doesn’t seem to fit. The hub has one skinny spline, but the cassette does not. I thought these were cross compatible? Does anybody know what the difference in standards is?

The hub having a skinny spline and the cassette having none isn’t an issue. What you have there should work. Make sure the splines are clean and the threads look good. Where specifically do you run into issues?
1) Clean your cassette and the freehub, especially inside your cassette, it’s pretty filthy and that won’t help mounting. Use a toothbrush and some degreaser.
2) There are really only 2 issues with XD compatibility that I know of: XDR exists for roadbike 13spd cassettes but your freehub clearly says XD. The other is Hope have a slightly non-standard XD freehub implementation that needs a spacer. I don’t think you have a Hope hub.
I think this might be a you problem, sorry. Clean it and try again.
