Hello. First of all, sorry I don’t know the correct terminology! I am not at all an experienced bike person.

I have a Trek FX3, and recently bought a jones loop h bar for it. The issue is that if I place the gear shifter on the bar before the brake lever, as it was on the old bar, it doesn’t really work: the part of the shifter that shows me what gear I’m in prevents the shifter from getting as close to the welded point on the h bar as it needs to be, pushing everything out as a result and defeating the purpose of the longer bar handles. I don’t even care about the gear indicator anyway, since I just go by feel, so that’s hyper annoying. I’ve temporarily remedied this by placing the brake lever on first, and then the gear shifter, as pictured. The issue with this is that it feels … awkward. I can live with awkward, but I’m wondering — before I make a few more adjustments to finalize this bar on this bike — if I can replace the gear shifter on its own to something less bulky?

  1. Um. Your hydraulic line is scary short. So I recommend replacing that before it fails.

I don’t really see a problem with the shifter. You put the shifter on the bar first, than the lever, then the grip. Secure the grip then move the lever to the grip so it’s touching, then move the shifter all the way to the right until it’s touching the lever. Everything should clear? I’m assuming you have it in that current config because your brake line is too short to run it the proper way.

  2. you need the version of your shifter without the optical gear display which is Shimano ISLM4100RAP1

also your brake hose is way too short with the new bars

  3. I can sympathize — I’ve had issues with that underbar gear display on the shifter getting in the way of bar curves. It was a mistake for Shimano to move away from the display above the bar!
