are you tired of the overcrowded streets of Rome Florence and Venice the way I like to describe the tourism problem in Italy is like this imagine Italy as a popular supermarket but you’ve got everybody shopping on the same three aisles while the rest of the stores open and available with a treasure Trove of goodies for the people that are in the know Italy has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Charming places to visit and many of them are hidden gems off the beaten path from from the northern Alpine region to the southern coastal region if you stay in a small town in Italy not only do you escape the throngs of tourists but you get to experience the authentic Beauty and culture that few people get to see but is available to anybody in this video I’ll reveal the reasons why I think that staying in a small town or Village offers you a much more rewarding and enriching Italian experience I’m in a Northern Region so most of the footage that you see is is going to be from the area around where I live but the idea works for anywhere in Italy all right let’s dive into the reasons why exploring Italy’s lesser known destinations can be the best decision for your next [Music] trip once you venture away from places like Rome and Florence and Venice and get off of the tour’s beaten path you’re going to find that just about everything is cheaper for instance dining out costs a fraction of and what it would cost in one of those touristy spots now why is that well in smaller towns and Villages these establishments have a lower operating cost lower rents cheaper produce local produce plus these restaurants rely on repeat business from locals unlike restaurants in the touristy areas where they can charge high prices to visitors that they’re never going to see again even hotels are cheaper very often you can get the same if not better amenities for much lower price at some of the hotels in the offto beaten path regions take sa Chile for instance it’s just an hour train ride from Venice here you can stay at the hotel D Leoni and enjoy this magnificent view a spa and beautifully appointed rooms for a fraction of the cost of a similar hotel in [Music] Venice when you stay in the touristy hot spots very often you’re going to feel like you’re rushing from one site to the next with barely any time to stop and smell the roses these hot crowded sites can be exhausting leaving you drained by the end of the day on the flip side you’ve got a much slower Pace in these small towns and Villages this means that you can actually relax and enjoy your surroundings leaving you with enough energy for the activities that you want to take part in when you feel like being active imagine sitting in a quiet Piaza people watching and just soaking in the local atmosphere it’s a simple yet rewarding activity and it’s one of my favorite things to do in Italy shopping is also a breeze when there’s fewer people around don’t have to Elbow your way through the crowds in restaurants and coffee shops the local markets or galat in these small towns you can truly save each moment making a travel experience much more enjoyable [Music] in these small towns you’re also going to find that you don’t have the same level of commercialization like you find in the major cities like Rome and Florence and Venice instead you’re going to find local shops family-owned restaurants and small markets that provide a genuine Taste of Italian life when you shop in these small towns you’ll discover unique products that are locally produced instead of mass-produced souvenirs you’ll find handmade craft local Delicacies and markets that sell a little bit of everything and that’s how you discover the Region’s true cultural heritage dining out is another area where small towns really shine these restaurants really focus on serving authentic home-cooked meals that are made with locally sourced products and all without that tourist markup that way you can enjoy delicious highquality food at reasonable prices and that means that you’re way more likely to eat actual traditional dishes now as I already discussed because the the pace of life is more relaxed and it’s more genuine you’re not going to be bombarded with overly aggressive sales tactics like you would in a very touristy area instead you can take your time exploring actually interacting with the locals and it’s this way that you can experience the true charm of [Music] Italy one of the biggest advantages is the abundance of playgrounds and open spaces for kids to enjoy Italy is a very kid-friendly country with plenty of safe and fun environments for kids to play run around and burn off some steam and even make new friends with fewer crowds these towns are much calmer making it a lot easier for parents to keep an eye on the kids then the relaxed pace reduces the Stress and Anxiety that a lot of parents fear about losing their kid in a sea of tourists allowing everybody to enjoy the vacation more Italians absolutely love kids and very often you’ll find locals going out of their way to make your children feel welcome and it’s that warm and friendly attitude that’s going to make your kids feel embraced by the local community and those are the memories that your kids are going to remember the most small towns also offer a bigger variety of activities that kids love to do such as swimming in the sea or in a local Lake playing games in the park or just exploring nature and it’s these types of activities that allow them to burn off some energy in a healthy and memorable way [Music] while Rome is famous for its ancient ruins there are fascinating remnants scattered all throughout Italy and many are found in these small towns you’re not going to find landmarks like the Coliseum obviously but there are plenty of ruins to admire there are loads of small museums dedicated to the ruins to the history of that particular area and often they only cost a few Euro to get in wandering through these lesser known areas will stumble upon beautifully preserved medieval streets cozy patas and Charming oldw World architecture and these hidden gems often have fewer tourists and that allows you to appreciate all the intricate details of Italy without the crowds small towns offer all kinds of unexpected surprises like ancient castles historic churches and even unique local Traditions that have been practiced for centuries each town has its own story to tell and you’re going to be there to soak it all [Music] in while small towns might be within Striking Distance of major sites they’re often Closer To Nature that provides easier access to outdoor activities like hiking biking and more Italy’s diverse landscape means you’re never far from mountains that are ideal for hiking and adventure sports whether you’re an a hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll through some beautiful nature the options really are endless many small towns are near beautiful lakes perfect for swimming and the sea is often within reach as well this means you can enjoy a refreshing dip or do some water sports all without the hassle of large [Music] crowds now staying in smaller towns and Villages doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the major attractions if you plan things well you’ll find a place that’s still well connected to the major cities and that way you can feel really far from the crowds and the hustle and bustle without actually being far from them I’m going to use such chilia again as an example so this town is full of charm great views it’s very relaxing the pace is much slower and yet it’s only an hour away from Venice by train it’s also really close to the doll es in just 20 minutes a half an hour you can be in the mountains or you can go the other way and be in Venice in an hour so when you stay in a place like that you’ve got the bucket list destinations that you’re looking for right at your fingertips so you go there for the day and then you come back to that quiet and peaceful and relaxing place to settle down and recharge your batteries after a long day of sightseeing and that gives you the best of both worlds you’ve got the iconic sights and you’ve got the authentic Italy one of the unique experience that you’re almost guaranteed to find in these small towns especially in the summer is a saga this is a local Festival that’s dedicated either to a a patron saint of the area or a particular food for example you could stumble upon a sagra dedicated to the local water buffalo like we have in my area this sagra featured the mozzarella cheese made from the milk it also featured some dishes made from the meat of the local water buffalo and it was held Within the Ruins of a 1,000-year old castle so that adds even more to the charm it’s not just about the sagas there’s all kinds of events going on there were concerts for example in saile we saw this sleepy and peaceful Piaza one week later transformed into a high energy extreme sports festival and these types of events are very common especially in the summer and it’s a good way for these sleepy towns to wake up a little bit and kind of get the adrenaline pumping and it’s not just these festivals that happen occasionally that make these small towns a great place to stay there are all kinds of oddities and hidden gems that don’t make it into the guide books for instance in the small medieval village of venzone which is near the Austrian border you can find some mummies displayed in a crypt that date all the way back to the 1300s they’re perfectly preserved and they’re shrouded in mystery and it makes for an interesting if not creepy experience you’ll also encounter many churches with Rich histories amazing artwork and they’ve largely been forgotten by Outsiders so these unexpected finds add another layer of depth to your visit to Italy and these are the things that you remember these are what make the memories in your trip to Italy Unforgettable [Music] outside of the major cities there were also more options for accommodations such as an Agri Turismo these are Farm stays where you stay on an actual working farm where you can immerse yourself in the local rural Italian life when you stay in in Aur Turismo not only you’re going to be able to relax but you can even take part in some of the activities that a farm does you could do some cheese making or a cooking class featuring all the local ingredients off of the farm you could take part in the Great Harvest and even do wine tastings it’s a fantastic way to experience Italy’s Rich agricultural Heritage and enjoy fresh homemade meals then you also have the albergo defo which literally means scattered Hotel it’s a concept which involves you staying in rooms around the town instead of in one specific structure for hotel and the idea is to integrate tourism into the local community and that really allows you to live like a local you’ll get a taste of authentic Italian life while still enjoying the Comforts of a modern hotel as someone who lives in a small town near the breathtaking dolomites I can truly say that these aspects of Italian living have enriched my life in countless ways and I want to share this idea with others because the magic of Italy extends Way Beyond The Tourist hotspots No Matter What area in Italy you choose to stay these ideas are Universal you’re going to get to experience authentic food stunning Landscapes and warm and hospitable locals there’s so much to discover in Italy that you’re really doing yourself a
