Could be a solid basis indeed. You could even put drop bars on it. Lots of mounting options for racks and the like.

    What’s the gearig like?

  2. Any bike can do it really. It’s all about priorities though.

If your priority number one is touring (especially a long tour), you can probably do better than this one (carbon fork means no front panniers for instance).

For a similar budget you could probably find some second hand Surly, Kona, Fuji touring oriented bike.

  3. Looks prime, question is do you like it. Literally any bike can be made to suit what you want it to do (within reason, you ain’t going to tour Europe on a trials bike).

Front brake depends in what areas, e.g. Alpines, and systemweight you come around in long descends.

  5. Should be OK. My concern would be the crankset – chainring looks non-removable and a little large for loaded climbing, and a smaller chainring would mean replacing the entire crankset. If you buy new from a shop, they might be able to just do it on the house prior to sale. Like others have said, if you’re running heavy it might be good to look into second-hand full steel options

I rode from north UK to Italy on a marin muirwoods 1989 model with really crap groupset.. The STI shifters failed in France so had to find some very nice dx thumbies… easy in those days (1990)
