Was getting ready to put the bike on the stand for a wash after todays Grand Fondo and noticed a chunk missing out of the big chainring, the Indianapolis roads were not friendly snapping the chainring and cracking a bottle cage as well. Looking for recommendations on a replacement that’s not this plastic. I’m not really concerned with weight. Also I’m not 100% sure when this occurred during the ride (I think I felt/heard it about mile 40ish out of 63mi. Should I replace the chain as well? Thank you for all comments/ help or conversation/advice on chainring replacement. Thank you!!

I would inspect the chain very carefully. Any idea what got sucked into the chainring ?
Buy a new outer chainring and replace. Get a chain checker that measures 0.75 and 0.5 and check the chain. If the chain is worn beyond 0.75 replace that and probably the cassette too.
But best case it’s prob just a new outer chain ring

When something breaks, est bet is to go up a level in quality. I’d go for some ultegra chainrings, which, according to a quick Google search, should be compatible with a 105 crankset, but you should confirm
Replace it with the same one that’s on it right now. No reason to change cranksets. Something got sucked into the chainring or there was a defect. Just buy the same chainring and swap it (or have the shop swap it). If you’re lucky a shop in your area may carry the correct chainring.

How new is this bike? If it’s fairly new, I’m thinking it was a defect. Chainrings do break on occasion, but not that often. Try for a warranty if it’s within a reasonable time frame. If not, just throw another ring on there. I wouldn’t hesitate to replace it with the exact one, but an upgrade isn’t a terrible idea if feasible and fiscally sound.
That’s a 105 DI2 crank? I don’t think there’s any thing as far as a replacement chainring available other than a another from Shimano.
The rivets do introduce a weak point, but I think this was a one off thing. You may want to talk to the dealer who sold the bike. A warranty replacement may be possible.
Take it to a Shimano service center, they’ll probably warranty it on the spot, I would.
Maybe try a warranty replacement. Some models had defects.

Send Shimano warranty an email, they replaced my Dura-Ace rings for a similar tear/cracked tooth.
