  1. It’s not a wrench. You use a hammer and pic to get it going and then unscrew it from there.

    You either need a Sturmer ring cup spanner or a suitable C spanner.
    Anyway, if the hub looks clean and the races are not pitted, I would say it is OK and not bother to disassemble further. Drop some medium oil (not too thin) regular 30W motor oil will do; I run mine in oil: smooth as silk. Take caution to reassemble in the proper order (loosen left cone, assemble the driver and right cone and then and lastly, the left cone) and call it a day.

    If you can’t live with a dirty rear wheel that inevitably oil lubed hubs will eventually mess, use a light runny grease.

    Brucey, from cyclinguk, quite an expert and hub gesr connoisseur, recommends and I can vouch for, to use one-shot land rover swivel grease: It is thixotropic, i.e thick grease but gets runny when sheared. That means that sticks to and protects the internal parts when not in use, but liquifies and gets everywhere to lubricate the mexhanism when it is set in motion.

    You can lubricate old school hubs both with grease and oil by using a regular syringe and dropping the lubricant directly to the innards via the hole in the axle, with the shifting chain removed.
