in this video I’m going to give you a run through of a Bolton test route so this is the Bolton driving test center here in a quite Sunny greater Manchester here today um so I’m going to give you a full run through the route I’m going to give you some tips and advice via a commentary drive as we go around I’m going to show you where they do the maneuver as well um and there’s a few little tips and hints on the way about areas which could trip you up and fail you and maybe where I’ve had a few students over the years uh fail on this particular test room so hope it helps okay I’m going to turn right out of the test center so you check the center right mirror indicate up just waiting for a couple of vehicles to pass just waiting for a safe Gap yeah there we go off we pop turn right at this mini roundabout looking for anyone uh from the right who’s going ahead got a black van and the blue Van’s going left so that’s fine [Music] so that’s Western Street Turning now onto grean cresant the road here bends to the right then to the left it’s not too sharp so you can get your speed up to around about 25 mil per hour gear three for my car for some cars you may be able to get into gear four at this speed yeah around about 25 is fine once you around the bend you can open it up a little bit where now regarding your speed Crossroad coming up but you have the right way if you notice the giveway markings on the roads on the left and the right par vehicle on the left so you just check your center right mirrors move a little bit further to the middle wait for it to be in the left mirror and then just pop your car back over towards the normal driving position near to the Cur so I think these are traffic lights uphead are on red noce the vehicles are breaking in front so I’m just slowing it down it’s going to stop just before this function I’m just stopping here in the traffic just don’t want to block this road that’s on the left hand side I’m just holding back here in case somebody wants to turn in or out before I get moving again moving again now so that’s fine okay so this is Fletcher Street I’m going to turn left at the traffic lights mirror this turns me on to Bridgeman street so the examiner here may ask you to pull up on the left so it’s going to pull up on the left indicat his cars ahead and behind again within about a grids width of the curve just neutral handbrake cancel signal and then they normally say just driving again when you’re ready so back into one check around yep I’ll clear I’ll indicate cu the car ahead of me another way go yeah just in case that car head been wanted to park or turn um me driving off could affect their decision making so it’s good just a throw an indicator on just out courtesy you know there’s nobody at the zebra Crossing on the left and right so there’s there’s a school on the left um but it’s school holidays at the moment but it’s also time wise is it’s around about midday so they’re all in school at the moment so I’d recommend around about 25 mph if there’s the power vehicles there I’m going to turn right these traffic lights Center and right mirror indicat up it’s moved over to the right hand lane if you can see the arrows on the floor so this is Bridgeman street I’m going to turn right onto High Street as they on green there’s no traffic opposite turn dly across gear two as will go across okay yeah so this is High Street just going to ease off just allow this big truck just to get back a bit more on their side yeah here we go quite a big truck there didn’t want to get involved with that so I’ve stuck it in around 225 mph just for this road not really had chance to get up near to 30 there was no sign so it is a 30 couldn’t really get up up towards 30 just because of the conditions on the road there so once the lights change I’m going to be turning left at these traffic lights this takes me onto Dy Street okay so like I said I’m going to turn left so I’ll do me Center left mirror indicate left now connect to gear two before I turn yeah so this is High Street turning onto gby Street okay you can be quite a busy road this one quite a few hazards so keep your eyes peeled on this road lots of shops lots of cars just random pedestrians there just strolling across got this car on the left just in a bit of an awkward parked position give a bit of space there I just T yeah he was trying to drive off anyone at the Crossing no nobody The Crossing so that’s fine up to gear three the P vehicle on the left on double yellows just check my center right mirror just creep out around giving it a Do’s width the ban on the left on his phone could just walk out I press the button it’s fine there’s another pedestrian Crossing coming up here yeah nobody really there guy on the right approaching but yeah I think he is going to use it but I got there before him so that was fine yeah it’s just pressing just check to my mirrors it’s just changed there now right there’s a bus line coming up which you can drive in between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday okay so the time now is just past midday so I’m going to drive in it it’s a perfectly acceptable bus lane to use notice I’m if you look ahead I’m the only vehicle actually using it seems like the only person who can read the sign yes you’re fully okay to use this bus lane as on you’re driving between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the test route so for example for Bolton you’ve got three tests in the morning you’ve got the 800 a.m. the 907 test and then the 1014 test so the 9 the 8:00 and the 9 uh 07 test you would not be able to drive in that bus lane but all the other route all the other time sorry cuz like I said the next time is 10:14 you can drive in that bus l so just be a wary of what time your test is um and then you can be familiarize yourself with whether you’re going to drive in the time bus LS or not so the crossing could have changed then there was a lady just waiting but I was checking my mirror just off my gas just in case but didn’t change by the time I was there right so this has now turned into St Helen’s Road it’s the same road as was what I said before D DAV just changed to St Helen’s road further up we go the bus lanes been and gone got a bus lane on the other side that’s another Tim bus lane I’m coming back down this road on the route um when I come the other way later so just remember that is a bus lane that I can drive in we’re we here just to keep it at 30 mph cuz it’s quite a long straight road it’s very easy to suddenly find yourself doing mid-30s or more down this road right green light’s been on a while C danger check my mirror just coming off my gas a touch yeah too close there even it went to Amber that was fine right now after the bend up ahead it will change to 40 mph so this is still St Helen’s Road there’s also another one of those bus lanes that I can drive in so try and spot to where the 4 M out SIDS are coming up shortly just and this will bend okay so there’s one on the right if you can see just near that black part car for there one just on the left here next to the tall wall right so now for Miles hour then here’s that bus lane again which I can drive in so if they don’t say anything regarding which way you’re going you can drive in it we just notice the post van was part in it just wait till I’ve gone past it then I’ve signaled check my Center left mirror left blind spot and then I’ve moved it right now up ahead I’m going to turn right at the traffic light you could be following a sat up at this point or you could be following sign for West hon all wig so I’m going to signal right Che my center right mirror right blind spot yeah that’s fine just cancel my first signal just going to signal again when I get a bit closer to the lights yep and I’ll signal right about there yep then four to gear two off my clutch um yeah lights have changed so just dropping into gear one I put it in neutral actually just cuz I know they just changed a got a little weight here just put my handbrake on yes so if they don’t say anything there regarding if you’re turning right to these lights or the sa says turn right or you’re following West oron or Wigan just obviously just stay in that left hand lane because you could also turn left at these lights following where it says walk done that takes you on to the A6 which is Manchester Road which Manchester Road left or right here um just remember it’s all the 40 mph sign and I can’t see any other signs at these lights I can’t see any when I look into the road that I’m turning into so if you can’t see any different signs you can presume it’s still 40 um but obviously when you turn into the new road look for signs for information see if anything’s telling you right noce the car’s opposite and moving so I’m going to put it back into gear one they must be on a Green Arrow filter but I know I’m next right and if you look there’s no one there I need to give way to so I can just turn diagonally straight across into gear two just looking to see if I can see any 40 signs ah yeah there’s one on that left lamp post and there’s also one on the right Lamp [Music] Post Yeah so picking my speed up towards 40 mph right yeah this is Manchester Road the A6 it’s a 40 mph Road a a famous ice cream place just on the left there a few power vehicles so I’m just going to jump some right just give the those power vehicles a bit of a wider birth yeah can move back in again now you know do a part and a dotted line cycle Lane that’s perfectly legal you’re actually fine you could park for example like there where the bus stop markings are we’re actually fully legal to park in a dotted line cycling I think it’s a bit inconvenient to cyclist which I would 100% agree there’s actually nothing in the highway cold though to state that you can’t park in a dotted line cycle Lane solid line cycle Lane that’s a different story there’s no parking allowed in there no here the cycle Lane just ends briefly because of the island so can move a bit to the left and then it starts again just after the island there if you notice how the marking sort of change slightly every 5 to 10 seconds just have a glad of your central mirror just to see if there’s any cars behind you what speed they’re doing and what kind of distance they are from you just always good to have an idea it’s not an obsession by any means like I said only every 5 to 10 seconds get your main focus on the road ahead right now there’s a roundabout coming up this is Checker bent roundabout I’m going to turn right third exit the sign on the left completely hden by the trees but it says Bolton M6 61 which is right third exit so this one cuz you’re in I’m in gear four I’m going to go four to gear two slowly up my clock keep my Lane to the right once I’m in Lane do my center right mirror pop my indicator up just drop into one while the car are heading me can’t enter the roundabout all right yeah so it can be quite tricky this roundabout so I’ll talk you through it as I enter it it’s three lanes as you enter the roundabout so cuz I’m turning right I’m going to stick first of all initially to the right hand lane to the inside of the roundabout right next to the curb on the right hand side next to the grass carad of is gone yeah that’s fine for me as well so keeping on this inside it’s quite large roundabout so speed wise you can get above 20 mph on this one so exit number one’s just on the left there for West Orton exit number two is coming up for Charlie the next one’s number three so I’m going to indicate left now check my Center mirror left mirror left blind swap and if the left Lane’s clear which it is I can glide over as I can just see there but if you notice there is a lane on the right so if the left lane isn’t clear for you to change by all means stay in that right hand lane because that lane exits as well and then once you are in that lane just indicate left again no since it’s still 40 mph and just see how cars react you’re asking the question about whether you want to get back into the left and right because at this roundabout the only way you can ask you to go here is ahead for Bolton because left and right on this roundabout takes you onto the m61 mway so this is sale way so again I’m going to skip gear three down to a th000 revs then 4 to2 off my clutch looking ahead and to the right keeping my position close is to the curb on the left Yep looks clear at the moment so you see where the bus and the gray cars going following the same Lane just keeping in the outside Lane just next to this curb on the left hand side sensor left mirror and Signal left down now still 40 m hour notice again there’s two lanes here so it’s good idea as you exit just check your Center in your right mirror just look for any uh any Keen motor motor racing cars you want to try and get ahead as the lane merges up ahead notice the arrows on the right and telling and horse on the right L is going to mge back bus is stopping in the bus stop stop just check my center right mirror just move around yeah it’s fine just also dropped into gear two there just to give myself a bit more time to process what was going on right so it’s still 40 mph on this road there’s been no 30 signs yet there been a couple of reminder signs on Lambs as I mentioned previously Kad is doing 34 miles for hour the moment so just keeping my distance for now 4 sign just on the left there if you see oh it’s turning right so check my mirror just break to drop to gear to three now they’re out the way and build must speed back up towards 40 right so this is Wigan Road it’s 40 m hour quite a rural part of Bolton this one quite a nice part uh part of the uh part of the town you notice up ahead the uh traffic lights are on red good idea when you’re at 40 mph to start on a little bit earlier than wood from say 30 mph engage a little bit of break try and use a little bit of engine braking as well good gear change to do from uh 4 of like a four to gear two off your clutch and then pop it into one once you’ve [Music] stopped carry on ahead of these lights you notice there’s two lanes that go ahead so it’s a good idea just keep an eye on your right hand mirror just to see again if there’s any any overtaking Vehicles cuz up ahead the right lane merges back to the left might be able to see the marking not very good actually yeah the right lane is merging back to the left right so it’s still 40 mph uh the car front is not doing it more it’s doing 32 33 but it does change to 30 mph if you notice the sign just coming up on the right and then I’m going to take the next road on the right is where this white car has just turned out from so this is Wigan road going to move move into the lane now get back there we go so I’m turning into chip Hill Road this is a 20 mil hour road now on this road they sometimes ask you to do the reverse parallel park if there’s a car to do that maneuver around this Bend so I’ll just see if there is one yeah there is there’s a white one just coming up there if you can see it so it’s going to park up just on the left here they ask you to pull in and park before the car they want you to use okay so at this point the advis I’d like you to do the reverse Park exercise involving the white car here try and complete the maneuver within two car lengths of the white vehicle and try and keep it reasonably close to the curve and you just go when you’re ready right I’m going to lower my left hand mirror a touch I’m going to need that to help me do this maneuver for later it’s best to do it now rather than do it on the middle of the middle of the road that’s not the easiest one to do this cuz you got to wait for the oncoming Vehicles as long as there’s no cars coming there’s nothing coming after this when I’ve check behind there’s nothing coming just going to get myself to the middle of the road get alongside the car out doors with put it straight in Reverse I’m going to put my left indicator on as well left and right blind spot looks clear no pedestrians so stay locked to the left one 2 3 4 five steering lock off just stop again check over my right left blind spot again pedestrians no nothing around back up until them a bit closer to the curb triangle small yep stop again just check around again quick steer lock to the right bring it around parallel to the curb and the car ahead of me yep steering lock off and then stop all right so there’s no need for you to go back any further than I am now um where I am now is about half a car length but they allow you like I said they word it as two car lengths back from the vehicle in front but essentially that’s including you as a car length so really what they’re saying is they’re trying to say stay within one car length of the vehicle that’s ahead of you which if I demonstrate if I back up a touch more one car length i’ probably say is about there so normally say when you can see the bottom of the tires of the car in front that’s probably about a car length so we wouldn’t go back any further than this if if you needed to do some adjustment the best thing to do is to go forwards towards the white vehicle then reverse if you need if you need to get rid of any angle or get closer to the curve because that gives you that space to do so okay now I finished the maneuver I’m just going to put my miror left side mirror back up to normal as it was before right then they’ll say yep thank you drive on when you’re ready if they’re not happy with the maneuver though what they’ll let say they’ll ask you the question are you finished now if they’re ask asking you that question they’re giving you a chance maybe to correct a potential problem with the maneuver so the problem with the maneuver may be distance from the curve they may feel you’re not close enough or you’re a little bit too close or they may feel like you’re on a bit of an angle which might cause a significant problem to Vehicles trying to pass you so if they say yep that’s fine just drive on again when you’re ready they are obviously happy with the maneuver but if they ask you uh you finished have a think about it have a look at your mirrors have a look around maybe that basically they’re telling you that you need to adjust something right right looks clear now so I’m going to drive on I’m going to indicate right cuz there is a vehicle behind me but again I can move off before it without slowing it down said it’s 20 mph if you remember just got a sign just on the left hand side there so still 20 just so just keep it nice and calm while you’re on this road we’ve got 30 signs just coming up on the left hand side for this so I’m going to turn right here so center right mirror drop it into gear one so it’s a hard one to see out of this Vision wise got a few part vehicles on the left wall on the right yep that was fine just check right left a couple of times right we’ve got a mini roundabout can be hard to see this one it’s just on the top of a hill ahead there’s no one turning right just looking at the road on the right as well yeah that’s fine it’s quickly followed by another one so I’d recommend just staying in the lower gear until you’ve gone past the second roundabout this one you looking to give way to anybody from the right turning right just hidden by the wall lean forward a touch yeah all clear that’s fine so 30 mph now on to hton Lane just building my speed up see lights up at the top are on red so I’ve just eased off my gas here just let the all peel out as my brake just watching my revs my revs are just creeping down to a th000 now so I’ll just drop a gear into two no the lights have just gone to Green but they may change these may be ones where they won’t stay on green for long I’m going to turn left set to left mirrors keep an eye on the lights see if they change and oh yeah I’m fine yeah I was prepared that they might have changed but they were okay right so I’m back onto St Helen’s road before do you remember earlier in the rout I said we were driving the other way down here and I said we encounter a bus lane which again we can drive in so I can drive in this one time is 20 P 12 perfectly fine to drive it all right and there’s a van there with its doors open can you see there so just going to check my center right miror I’m just going to move slightly further away from there there’s nothing in the right lane so I can move over a touch so again that’s the car front’s not using it so I’m just going to drop into two here yeah so what was going on here there’s a car waiting to turn right I think a truck that’s the problem okay there we go all right so yes the left Lane’s perfectly free so cuz they had an obstruction there people turning right why why are not people just using the left hand lane if they knew they could use that lane they could use that lane just to make progress on the inside this is where sometimes the problem occurs when people don’t look look and see what’s going on if somebody’s turning right and if the left lane is free even if it’s a bus lane which is timed you can drive in it use it because you may get stuck behind a car that’s turning right so it’s the end of the bus lane here solid line completely disappeared so we now got just this Lane for aead and then we’ve got the right hand lane to turn right at the traffic lights yeah so by using that left hand lane which is fully free no I was the only one of a lot of those Vehicles ahead that were not were not using that lane so that’s not class was undertaking because there was a car turning right there essentially was like a blockage in the right hand lane so I’m not seeking to gain an advantage there all I’m looking to do is make progress down the road right so that’s fully acceptable to do right now a bit further up there’s going to be another bus lane so I’m going to see if there’s any any other kind of situation here where people driving them or not obviously what you got to look at a lot of sometimes people say and comment on some of my videos that they don’t drive in the bus lanes because a lot of people they’re worried about buses stopping in the bus stops they worried about people parking in there the obstructions then they can’t get out of it essentially you’ve got to plan ahead so if the bus lane looks clear which it does at the moment if you look there’s nothing ahead just driving it so again it’s another one where you perfectly AC cble to driving it if you look ahead I’m the only vehicle driving in it if you notice right it is only a short one this one if you notice the solid line just disappearing in the middle of the road there so the cars on the right are having to move back anyway yeah again I’m the only one using it so remember if you got two-lane road you should drive in the left this is the one of the core principles of driving is you’re driving the left hand lane to go ahead you use the right hand lane for overtaking going around obstructions maybe preparing to turn right up ahead these are all acceptable now if you notice I’m not driving in the bus lane this time CU if you notice there there’s three part Vehicles so I’m going to stay out of that bus line there you look after the bus line though it looks perfectly clear so I’m going to indicate left check my left mirror left blind spot move back into it cancel my signal so it’s fully acceptable space again to use okay now up ahead I’m going to turn right at the traffic light so I’m going to signal right check my center right mirror of right blind spot let’s move into this right hand lane in good time drop a gear to two off of a clutch now into gear one right look at the traffic light on the opposite side there is a green arrow pointing to the right so noce the car’s opposite and not moving the Green Arrow tells me that their traffic light is still on red so that’s a filter arrow that means it’s fully okay for me to go as long as the exit Road on the right the road I’m turning into is perfectly clear which at that moment it was so now on to back onto High Street so essentially I was on this road before remember coming the other way what this test rout does basically just just does a big figure of eight you end up going down a lot of the same rows just coming the opposite direction from from the start of the test route to the end I’m going to turn left these traffic lights [Music] this is on to Bridgeman street it’s the sign on the left there says school 20 when lights show the lights are not showing so don’t have to do 20 mph just do what I think is safe and appropriate so I’m in gear three just doing around about 25 mph at the moment cuz there’s a few part Vehicles there so open up a bit more space now so it could technically go quicker with the cars had I’m really picking up the speed I’m just keeping my distance again keeping my speed mid 20s there was no one at that zepper Crossing okay all right traffic lights going up I’m going to turn right notice the markings here are well safe to say non-existent but I’m just going to stick to where I think the middle of the road is my right ties mirror signal to the [Music] right so on Bridgeman Street turning right onto Fletcher Street now notice the angle here I’m just going to try and keep keep my steering wheel straight here that white car just has to move around me looks clear now there’s no one coming on the inside yeah be wary there don’t add any turn while you’re waiting there just keep your car deadly straight and beware don’t go too far because of the cars ahead of you are coming from an angle from the left but they have to drive around you so if you start turning a bit to the right examiners can get a bit bit Twitchy there on the brake and just they think you’re going to turn before them or you’re going to interrupt into their space so best just to keep the car as straight as possible there right so this is Fletcher Street that’s now turned to Grecian cresant just around the corner from the driving test center here so not far away at all just keeping my distance from the car in front just doing the 20 23 24 mph just for these bends so the mini roundabout coming up and going to turn left the sign’s hidden by the trees if you notice just on the left I’m looking to see if anyone opposite is turning right so yeah you can see the white van clearly is that’s why the car in front’s Waiting if you look the next one is also turning right if you can see but I’m at the roundabout first so I’m am going to [Music] go okay so I’m going to turn left into the test center here right right now because I’ve already done my maneuver I’m not going to go into the car part this time all I’m going to do sometimes ask the examiners just to pull in just on the left here can you see just before where the examiners will park so this basically gets you out
