Cycling UK has launched a new off-road adventure route taking cyclists through 10,000 years’ worth of history in the south of England, creating a loop of gravel tracks and off-road trails through the heart of Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire countryside.
King Alfred’s Way, named after the Anglo-Saxon ruler of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, runs for 350km (220 miles) passing iconic locations including World Heritage Sites at Stonehenge and Avebury and Iron Age hill forts at Old Sarum and Barbury Castle, while also riding straight through the heart of quintessential England.
The charity has spent three years working on the route, which connects four of England’s National Trails: North Downs Way, South Downs Way, Ridgeway and Thames Path. The route was developed by upgrading certain sections of footpath to allow cycling, and also includes existing bridleways, byways and quiet country lanes.

Super cool short film, I wanna go and do it all over again!
A lovely film, and very inspiring. Keep up the fantastic work on these stunning off-road routes 👍
I can't wait to ride this, just got an eMTB to review so this is perfect timing! Keep up the great work.
GuyKesTV Preview. Looks fantastic. https://youtu.be/Ne4LbLl0qM8
Awesome work and what a website to go with this! I love Wiltshire!! 🙂
Getting very excited about this! Well done Kieran and the team for putting this together. Route runs a few miles from me so will hop on at that point! Already looking at the logistics of it!
I'm going to sample a bit of this, this evening. I hope its signposted!
How long would you recommend for this route? I have four days coming up soon. I'm pretty fit and strong (recently managed a 110k road cycle in under seven hours without too much trouble), but I'm not sure when it comes to mixed terrain and a loaded bike. Also, solo 'cos yolo.
I ride some of these trials already (I'm near Broughton) and ride all around that area, Salisbury, Kings Somborne, Winchester, nice to see it's now a loop.
Now to ride it all 😁
Great video and amazing initiative. Could I just encourage you to try to have more diverse representation in future videos? The Black Cyclists Network emphasise how important it is that people from all backgrounds can see themselves in cycling, so for this video to be 100% white faces is a little disappointing on that front. Hope this comes across as helpful rather than critical!
Love the route that Ctc has put together, shame you didn’t include King Alfreds greatest battle site of Edington so close to your route and Bratton White horse which almost overlooks the battle site at Edington, not with standing the superb gravel in this area of the plain, anyone interested could head west at Tilshead on the Imber range track and follow this via Warminster to Bratton White horse and rejoin King Alfred way at Gore cross. Keep up the good work.
Starting on Monday near Liss. Decided against camping and I'm treating myself to a bit of luxury. Staying at Premier Inn Reading, The White Horse, Woolstone and a guest house in Crookham Village. All are very close to the route. Taking a gravel bike, GPS, battery, change of clothes and credit card and that's about it.
Looks awesome. Here is me bikepacking the ridgeway

This route is a great idea, thanks for putting it together and inspiring us to ride!
Have you cycled part (or all) of King Alfred's Way? Maybe you plan to after watching this video? Let us know in the comments ⬇
