This little baby jumped out at me on Marketplace for the price, condition, and small size. The guy we bought it from kept it in really nice, clean condition for his wife, and now my wife is the lucky second owner.
They figured the year to be 1995, but I am less certain—the color eludes me in the catalogs as does the 500 LX group. Does anyone know where else I might confirm? Not much luck on Bike Rebuilds or Retrobike. And re: the 3rd pic, what am I looking at on this bottom bracket? All I ever expect to see here are some greasy, crusty splines.

I doubt it’s from the 90’s. I’d say mid-late 80’s from those u-brakes under the chain stays. Regarding the BB, if you’re asking what tool it takes, it’s probably one of these.

The Deore 500LX groupset was around for 1989/90, so it’s likely it’s an ’89, given the chainstay U-brake. It wasn’t unusual at the time for more entry-level models of any given tier of bikes to have last year’s tech; on the Rockhopper and Rockhopper Comp, the rear brakes had reverted back to seat stay-mounted cantilever brakes by 1989.
Is that a gel saddle?
