I stopped being able to use my front derailleur while out on a ride today, and noticed that the little end cap on the cable housing coming from the shifter had moved up the housing. When I got home and was able to take a closer look, it seems like the ends of the cable housing had become frayed.
Not really sure what caused it to happen, but it would probably be best to replace the housing entirely, right?

Replacing would be best, but you could also trim the end back about ΒΌ” and replace the housing ferrule and probably be fine with just a derail adjustment
The cable housing has these little wires inside and it punched through the plastic ferule. Usually the ferule sits against the flat surface of the cable stop, so it really should not do that, maybe the ferule is too big.
Might be best to replacing the housing and cables also if they’re old.
You will need to take the cable out if you only want to replace the ferule. You will need to cut the cable tip off and if you do not have a lot of extra cable at the end, you will need a new cable.
Assuming you have enough slack in the existing housing, my approach would be to remove the plastic ferrule, cut the housing back about 1/2 inch so i can get a clean cut, and then put everything back together with a new ferrule.
