Will it be cheap? Depends on how you define cheap.
It’s really up to you whether it’s worth it. Like I recently learned that a one-by-conversion is actually kind of expensive. But I did get to learn how to do it. And aside from some minor kinks the bike rips.
But it probably would have been wiser for me just save up for a couple months since buy a modern mountain bike with a one by.
So just ask yourself what do I want this bike to do for me. Sometimes it makes more sense to just buy something else.
For example say you want to make a gravel bike out of an old mountain bike. And you end up putting $500 into it. A used gravel bike might cost a couple hundred more. So you got to ask yourself what I am losing if I don’t buy the more modern option. In my case it means I don’t get to use threadless stems without an adapter, I don’t get disc brakes, and I probably can’t put a dropper Post in. It is a fun bike don’t get me wrong but if it weren’t for the crazy paint Job it had I don’t think it would have been worth the trouble.
If I had to do it again I would probably just buy another bike. But hey it was a learning experience.
But for you you might not have the same needs that I have. So it could make sense for you.
Looks too good. Keep in mind about replacement parts for it if you intend to maintain its appearance. Also, to make it viable as a commuter at a minimum you’ll just bolt on a front or rear rack plus a basket.
