what’s going on YouTube Welcome Back to the crazy cycling Channel today is going to be a really short video I just want to show you some crazy Dutch infrastructure I’m here in the Netherlands right now really close to a town called delft I’m also pretty close to Rotterdam which is basically straight that way over my shoulder you might be able to see some tall buildings over there but my immediate surroundings here is basically Countryside so I’ll do a 360 for you but basically we’ve got just a canal over there and then if I start turning you can see that I’m standing on a really quiet Country Road here there is a bike path over that way again some houses behind me just just a few uh then back to the quiet Road and back to the canal again and what you should really notice here is that it’s generally very very quiet but I’m going to show you something amazing so let’s just turn the camera you might hear some wind noise I guess but we’re just going to basically walk up to this bridge so far doesn’t really look like anything too special right kind of just looks like a normal Bridge in the countryside there’s even a horse riding path over there another little ditch um and yeah more countryside but at this point you might be able to start hearing some more sounds so have a look behind this gate and see if you can see anything how about now yep this is actually a humongous highway it’s actually the A4 which is the main road from Rotterdam to The Hague it’s a three-lane in either direction Highway and look at how much traffic there is this is insane they’ve basically uh dug down and built this highway below ground level which really keeps the noise away from the people living here and also just means that this isn’t a blight on the landscape because you I didn’t even know this was here until I happened to cross this bridge and all of a sudden realized wow this is a huge Highway uh but this is pretty crazy most of cost an absolute Fortune I’ll show you again how much traffic there is and uh yeah it’s really quite loud up here but all around is just Countryside and this sort of half tunnel concept really keeps the noise away they’ve even damned the canals on either side of this road which have done which they’ve done on both sides and over there you can also see there’s another Bridge and the uh Bridge is uh uh it’s actually a bridge for wildlife so it’s just there’s no Road there or anything it’s just a corridor for wildlife to cross this road as well so pretty amazing and uh yeah wow what a road so anyway hope you enjoyed that little video I’m gonna do a couple more videos on infrastructure in the Netherlands if I can uh so yeah thank you for watching take care and have a great rest of your day

  1. I think it’s more “crazy” and “insane” you live in a wealthy country with crumbling infrastructure and politicians who aren’t interested in providing a good quality of life for its citizens.

  2. Im dutch and i dont have a lot of good things to say about my country right now but there is one good thing i can say about my country and thats our infrastructure. Its probably the best in the world along side singapore, japan and germany.

  3. Hello cyclist what is your name? If you go there again, please take a closer look at the bridge up north you were pointing at as a wildlife crossing. It is basicly, but a.a.m.o.f. it is more then that, it is an aquaduct. So, wildlive yes, but a specific group of that. And moreover it is an essential part of the regional watersystem. especcially in terms of water quantity.

  4. As a Dutchman it took a while until i understood what was impressive

It was the moment you said that it was below ground level

Yeah i guess thats not normal in most places

  5. They planned this road in the 1970s and there were protests against it all the way until the 2010s when they decided on the compromise to build it this way. They are about to make a similar road in North Holland (if it's given a green light) by connecting the A8 to the A9 through a protected nature area.

  6. The best bicycling infrastructure in the world I dare to say. Still we left the Netherlands for changing into a totalitary distopia, cutting of farmers and fishermans, reshaping the beautiful environment into solar panel farms and huge birdchopping windmills. So go visit the Netherlands this year to enjoy the last remainders of this great country… it will be gone quite soon.

  7. It's a very nice stretch of highway we use several times a year to visit our friends who are living in Schiedam. I don't think they will build a similar highway in the Netherlands because the cost of this stretch of highway was far beyond the calculation they made. If they would have calculated the estimated cost more precise this stretch of highway wouldn't have been build. However calculating big projects is never precise in the Netherlands (otherwise we would not getting things done). Every time a big project is finished, the road tax and gasoline prices are increased to cover the losses.

  8. I don't think it's actually thee lanes in each direction but that's just a minor detail. Nice video! As a Dutch guy it's nice to be reminded of the engineering stuff we do 😉

  9. WOAH those tiremarks from the truck. Either suffered a major technical problem causing a complete loss of air or had a severe accident. Interesting video nonetheless, even though I'm Dutch and know about this project.
