No shame. The little thumb button will go down by one into a harder gear. The brake lever itself not only pulls towards the bars to activate the brake, but also swings 90° inwards (perpendicular) to shift to easier gears.

We all went through this at one point OP. Just wait for the first fall with clipless pedals. We all fall at least 3 times before the muscle memory takes over

Push the brake lever sideways towards the stem.
