I just picked up a Jamis Sputnik for cheap. Things a lil beat but I’m using it as a commuter/beater anyway. All the parts are stock so it looks like the previous owner didn’t put much work or upkeep in. Which areas should I hit first, maintenance wise to make sure this thing is safe and reliable while I’m in the process of fixing her up?

Condition is decent. Thing was sticker bombed and very dirty. Small amounts of surface rust, looks to have spent some nights out in the rain. Other than that it appears everything is operational. I have not taken her out for a spin yet
I have a sputnik, first thing I would do is change the saddle, it did not like the San marzo ( prob spelt wrong ) I got a charge spoon saddle on Amazon, everyone but is different though so you may be happy with it!
Then straps are a must have, hold fast is a good brand.
Then I switched out drop bars for nitto risers, also personal preference.
Bike is sweet though! Enjoy it!

Air up the tires, lube the chain, & ride. You can learn what you need to do by riding it some. Enjoy.
