I was unable to get the crank off with a gear puller so resorted to the hacksaw/ hammer with no luck. Any ideas other than angle grinder through the bb spindle – will be replacing bb so not concerned about destroying it.

Anyways, you might as well finish the job with the angle grinder. But next time you have to get the right tools – you need a square taper crank puller (like so https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51sgdocaHmL.jpg) , and a bottom bracket tool (this https://www.bikefit.co.nz/cdn/shop/products/BBT-22_005.jpg?v=1585383437)
Also be aware one side of the bottom bracket has opposite threads.
You should never use a propane torch on a bike, but since the crank is destroyed already, flame it smoking hot and it will probably come off with the gentle tap of a hammer.
I would try to get a trim bar or other small prybar into the crack to open up the crank’s spindle hole a little bit and it should wiggle off.
Nut splitter might be safer.
Pickle fork might work
