Utrecht to Schipol – Bicycle Tour – Netherlands and Belgium – Part 13
This part of our 800km in the summer of 2017 takes us from Utrecht to Schipol. Utrecht is one of the best cycling cities in the world. It has amazing bicycle infrastructure including fietsenstaling (bike parking garages) and intelligent traffic light.
In the summer of 2017, our family returned to Europe for another bike tour. We started in Amsterdam and bicycled 800 km to Brussels and back to Amsterdam.

it’s pretty quiet here in Baarn this morning we had our big video shoot with Dirk yesterday I’m feeling pretty tired one more ride one more sleep and then we go home we’re just riding to the train station we’re gonna take our bikes on the train [speaking in Dutch] Het is het station. [muffled talking] we just got on the train to Utrecht and there’s a nice big place to put your bikes What do you think? tacos [muffled announcment] right turn coming up we’re doing a little cycling in Utrecht couldn’t resist coming back it’s pretty cool amazing cycling traffic awesome infrastructure fietsenstalling [bike parking lot] fietsenstalling everywhere fietsenstalling this is it this is it this is it! this is crazy [from off screen] Hello! Hello [off screen speaking in Dutch] …sorry I don’t speak Dutch I talked to them at the front we’re just having a look around we’re from Canada [off screen] okay, you don’t park here? no not today next time maybe it’s beautiful [off screen] it’s enormous yeah it’s incredible and you’re making it bigger right? [off screen] yes, same as here only both sides A double? So doubling the size? [off screen] Doubling, yes. so how many bikes in total? [off screen] At the moment?…5,000 [muffled] wow that’s incredible wow This is our last bike day. We’re biking about 42 kilometers left today and we’re biking to uhh what’s the airport’s name again? Schiphol! Schiphol. Leaving Utrecht to Schipol you know what feels good? Try pointing your toes woo! I see another road up there that we can go on should be alright well that’s this one I dunno how we get over there it’s rerouting here. Oh! It says now go straight oh but it’s way further we got to go up this somehow we missed a turn to go over that way Oh! so I rerouted it and it added 4k to where we were at yeah I say we just go up the steps They have that thing that you can roll your bike up did they? Yeah, I can see them right there Ready? Here we go Ready? Yep It’s not too bad you’re gonna have–keep going, keep going. Gonna hit there Are you hanging on? We are not going to Amsterdam. It gets confused here often Oh I think we’re good Gorgeous! About 14 kilometers to go!…Yeah and it rained here but it didn’t rain on us. We just missed it! That kind of a day today. Pretty sweet!…Uh oh maybe I spoke too soon. I see puddles up ahead. It’s starting to rain a little bit but it’s definitely putting a little bit of a nip in our stride here We’re moving it along quite nicely we have 10 kilometers left in this bike tour! roads that we’ve been on busy roads for quite a while it’s really nice to be off those onto a nice neat spot carrying us… towards our destination: Schiphol Airport. 8km to go Oh bittersweet! Almost at the airport [muffled talking] We’re at the airport! We’ve completed our bike riding and we’re treating ourselves to a little bit of luxury here at the Sheridan at Schiphol Airport ah that’s a great trip! a little bit sad to be leaving so many things–we wanted to do more… See you on the next tour! We had we had kind of a crazy check-in again. The Sheridan lost our bike boxes so we had to–after hours of them trying to find it– they paid for some new boxes. We got the new boxes, we had to take them all apart… It made it a lot more stressful than it could have been and we didn’t get to enjoy anything at the Sheraton but we’ve got them boxed and they’re weight was okay so we’re good to go Oosterbeek. What do you say? Oosterbeek. Oosterbeek. [We still have trouble pronouncing the word!] What do you say? Anything else to say about the trip other than Oosterbeek? The essence of Rotterdam is in Vlissingen. As we discovered specifically on the coast. That’s about it. Can’t bike out of Pearson Airport in Toronto so we’re waiting for our friend with the truck to pick us up [singing] I got them lazy greasy Rotterdam blues [singing] Rotterdam blues! [singing] I got them lazy greasy Rotterdam blues [singing] we got a flat tire now [singing] and there ain’t nothing we can do [singing] except fix that flat tire baby [singing] we got them lazy –watch out she wants through–we got them greasy [singing] Rotterdam blues [singing] I got them lazy [singing] greasy Rotterdam blues [singing] oh no! We’ve got another tire now [singing] and there’s nothing we can do [singing] except change that tire one more time [singing] oh yeah feel that tire? It’s pretty flat [singing] and it feels like I’m pulling you along now Mr. Yamo [singing] are you peddling it all?–oh wait a second, I think that tires flat again! [singing] oh no! yes it is [singing] I got them lazy. Greasy. [singing] Rotterdam blues!

What specifically does it mean to "point your toes"? (love your videos)
Wonderful adventure!
Hey guys! I've just finished watching your videos here in the UK, during my work lunch hours. Excellent stuff!
I am planning a family cycling tour of Holland during the Easter holidays next year (2019), for 10 days, perhaps with another family.
My kids will be almost 8 and approaching 6 at that time, and my wife is not a confident cyclist on the roads here. Having watched your videos and shown her the standard of the cycle routes in Holland and the associated infrastructure, she is much more comfortable with the idea. So I wanted to say thanks very, very much!
The next thing we need to do is to get the kids used to tagalong bikes, as they will be too small to cope with the longer days, even though they both cycle confidently already.
And if THAT is a success, there is the Loire cycle route in France. Or the Rhone. Or the Rhine. Or the Danube…..!!!
So, thanks again for all your information and, particularly, inspiration.
Simon.
Nice videos but why would you take bikes to the Netherlands? Surely it would be much cheaper to rent some locally?
🚴
I guess it s like a Neil Young song, lol, at the end, I really love Neil Young , my favourite from Canada , second are Arcade Fire.!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y79WDHhuQUc&index=2&list=RDWB597D24XB0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYLHtnWW9mQ, Neil tells in a song how his life was in Canada, he was a young boy when he moved with his mother to Winnipeg.
Did you notice the only cyclists wearing helmets are foreigners (buitenlanders)? Maybe its confidence who knows.
Love your adventures here. Must have been heavy bringing the bikes up the bridge, just half a mile back at that spot you could have used a tunnel underneath the traintrack :). Would have saved you some energy.
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. How many days did it take for you and your family to complete the 800 km ride in the summer of 2017?
I wanna meet you guys one day… I'm often in Utrecht and I know the center of the city by heart…
Thanks for the ride at UTRECHT super bike parking …. I 've never been there ….
I've seen all the video's of this trip and it just occurred to me that your voice sounds a little like Clarke Griswold, so I must have been watching National Lampoons European Cycle Vacation 😉
5:46 LOL "gorgeous" ….. while seeing rain in the distance
that underground bike-parking lot in Utrecht is actually the BIGGEST in the world!!
Nice tour! Next time when you come over i think its more easy to rent some bikes over here instead of bringing your own. Possibly you could even rent some tendems overhere to. Probably cheaper and isnt such of a hassle while travelling by plane.
next yime try the "knooppunten" bicycle routes. You avoid a lot of the heavy traffic
nice ………if you are into bikes and infrastructure this canal could be interesting https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0intLFzLaudFG-xAvUEO-A ………he is canadian too, but living in amsterdam at the moment
Stop your brain washing nois , you haven’t got ir
