Just got a flat bar Surly Preamble the other day and was riding it home tonight when this happened suddenly and put me down for the count.
This is my first geared bike so I’m super out of my depth and don’t even know how something like this could happen.
Do I just need to get a new chain or is there other stuff afoot that i need to adjust?
Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Looks like you just need a new chain. Links will break from time to time. Since it’s a first bike with gears, a local bike shop would be best.
Your bike is possessed by demons. That’s insanely weird.
A new chain should be enough. I’ve never seen a pin fall out of a chain on its own like that. Usually it takes a dedicated tool and a fair bit of force. So to me, it’s almost certainly a weird manufacturing defect or improperly constructed chain that led to this. When the new chain is on, I’d probably also go through all the gears available to make sure the chain doesn’t rub on anything – even if it does, I don’t think it should cause this, but it’s better if it moves freely.
Maybe whoever fitted the chain didn’t push the pin back in properly, assuming it has no quick link. Either way that’s a huge bummer!
