This is a relatively new tire with less than 2,000 miles on it. There's plenty of tread and the rubber is in good shape.

Unfortunately I ran over a large shard of glass that tore a pretty decent gash in the tire casing, enough to where I can easily see the blue liner inside. The casing is torn in such a way that there's a piece of the casing holding on, but will probably fall off soon leaving a hole in the outer casing that's probably 2mm in diameter. The glass pierced all the way through and cut my tube as well.

Is this safe to ride on, or does it need to be replaced?

Is this Schwalbe Marathon Plus done for?

  1. As the integrity of the casing is compromised I would replace it, it will fail if stressed. Wont be long before it inconveniences you on the road.

A stitch in time saves 9!

  2. The blue liner is a on the outside of the casing, not underneath it, see here https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/513hkhxynqL._AC_UF1000,1000_QL80_.jpg

What the tire looks like from the inside is what matters, just going by the outside this is not any kind of big deal.

IF there is a 2mm hole in the inside casing put a puncture repair patch on the inside of the tire to cover it and prevent the tube from bulging out through it, the ‘glueless’ type works best for this in my experience. This isn’t a lightweight race tire so there aren’t likely to be issues down the line from this kind of repair.

I’ve used a bit of super glue or epoxy to seal holes like this. Sometimes they’ll get filled up with dirt and grit and wear through the inner casing. I would say this tire is good to go once you’ve made that simple repair. The carcass of the tire looks good, but double check that the damaged area isn’t bulging or anything.

The hole is tiny, just stick a small patch on the inside and replace/repair the tube.

  5. I’ve ridden worse for 1000s of miles more. But hey, this is Reddit, so you should probably bin it and buy new in case it kills you and your family.

It’ll be fine. I’ve ridden the things until pretty much the whole centre of the tire was just the blue poking through. Still no punctures.
