Went on a bikefishing trip last weekend along the McKenzie River Trail with the primary goal of catching fish and making a short to enter into the Swift Campout Video Challenge. Broke my fishing pole tip and my gopro, but had a great time! A few thoughts on the route:

  1. I was shocked that it really didn't feel that busy. We went on Saturday/Sunday and the weather was phenomenal.
  2. We saw people on gravel bikes, its all singletrack, but its generally smooth and flowy. I pretty much always ride a hard tail, and thats what i'd recommend, but you don't need it!
  3. You can wildcamp along sections of the Mckenzie River Trail. There are some "spots" where people obviously set up camp. The Forest Service campgrounds were full.
  4. Fishing was good, (and I am a terrible fisherman) access isn't always easy, but you'll find the good spots as you ride along the trail. The places where I caught fish a Tenkara rod would have worked just as effectively.
  5. We took it super chill, I think this is an awesome option for someone who wants to do their first single track bikepacking trip!
