I’m interested in this type of tent for some backpacking/bikepacking. Has anyone ever used one? Not this exact model necessarily but this style.

The highlights that interest me:
-Size, I backpack with another person and often bring my dogs. This seems plenty big for that
-weight: it says 3.8 ounces, I feel like 3.8 pounds is more realistic, but that doesn’t seem bad to me either way
-price: at 90 bucks this isn’t too bad
-lack of poles/ease to put up and down, these seem really easy to use.

My hesitancies
-shape: they hold up into a pretty big disk, I wasn’t sure how to fit that on a pack or a rig, has anyone overcome that?
-waterproofness: with most tents I’m hesitant on this until I have either tried it or had someone recommend it to me.

What are your thoughts?

  1. Not sure how you’re going to pack a 3″ / 90cm diameter thing on your bike. FWIW I have heard bad things about those in terms of waterproofing (no rain fly). The first night it rains you’re going to get soaked. Those are intended to be sun shades, not over-night proper hiking tents. You will need to invest in a more expensive tent if you want to stay dry (such as the Big Agnes Copper Spur AL3 bikepacker). Buy once, cry once, as they say. I am sorry to give you bad news but these are the hard facts of the matter you will learn one way or another.

3.8 lbs seems awfully heavy for a tent, what are the poles made of, osmium??

That disc also looks super inconvenient to pack on a bike. 3’ diameter? That’s not going in a pannier, you’re gonna have to strap that baby to a rack.

Unless you plan to always go with your spouse and both kids, I wouldn’t bother with any tent that can house more than 2 people. Mine says it’s a 2-person tent but it would be a tight fit for both of us.

ETA: 3.8 lbs isn’t that heavy, I guess

  3. That style tent sucks, and good luck with that 3′ sail riding on a windy day. Get a real tent. They’re easier to set up, break down, pack, carry and are more weatherproof

I think you’d be better off with a compact 2 or 3 person tent and a tarp for the dogs to sleep under.
