I’m joined by Local 12 social media editor, Richard Skinner, and we discuss how badly the Bengals need to get off to a fast start this season.

all right skinny gave me a thumbs up hey you go you’re back I’m back all right you can hear me kind of the whole process able to hear each other oh you’re look like you’re you’re enjoying the sunshine there in in in in Kentucky I am um I I got to get acclimated I’m getting ready uh I’m teeing off at about 7:06 tonight with my daughters my one daughter’s up from Florida so she and my older daughter and I are going to go play gol play nine holes of golf we usually do it around Father’s Day we couldn’t sync it up this year so this was the night we picked tonight so I’m just getting a little acclimated to the heat I’m I’m trust me I got I’m under cover of the the back deck so that helps a little bit so so you’re you’re not going to just let them win right you’re going to go show who lost yeah we well my we usually play for drinks except now my oldest daughter’s pregnant so uh she’s the designated driver for the night I guess that that’s always a good thing too hey you got to have those skin that that is a a must you got to have figure out how to get to the bar and get back without going to jail so you have that’s great then see that’s what I love about my daughter right now she’s 20 she can’t drink so she she’s my DD a lot so I like that so you think yeah right exactly well she doesn’t drink when when she’s driving me around I’ll put put you that way that’s what Ma that matters a lot yeah exactly exactly now next year when she’s 21 she said yeah we’re we’re going out I said look I said I said that’s fine I said I said well she wants to go out with us I mean not you know for a little while then she out with their friends but I said look honey I said I have to at least buy your first legal drink I bought my son his first legal drink it’s it’s like a you know a think of Father a proud of her father by buy his kids their first legal drink yeah I I didn’t buy her first drink but but on her 21st birthday cuz she we went to a restaurant she had a margar she ordered a margarita cuz she wanted to get carded but I said you’re going to have a drink with me at my choice and I made her drink a belt of Wild Turkey um she has not touched whiskey since it did not go well it did not go well oh that’s awesome that’s awesome skinny I love that oh my goodness U yeah well actually down at the morine house there I opened up a new Bourbon Room so that’s going to be kind of kind of nice for me I’m I’m a kind of a start to be a I don’t know you’re a bon guy I’m St to be a little bit of a of a b guy yeah I mean I I’ve been a beer guy most of my life but I if I’m drinking alcohol or liquor rather if I’m drinking liquor it is uh the drink of choice is a bourbon for sure yeah yeah I think I think it’s just the the the general area of the country we’re at we all yep grew up drinking drinking bourbon all right so let’s get into this thing here all right so we’re in the middle of the the Dead period here so we had OTAs we had mini camp you were down there um I haven’t been able to go down there as much because they were inside the practice indoor practice facility so I haven’t been able to go on the bridge as much what do you think the team looked like as far as how Joe looks how the new guys are acclimating to Joe and just the new guys in general there wasn’t much to take away to be honest with you and I I I say this in all seriousness it was good I we all put videos out there so and there was video from TVs as well so everybody got to see Joe throw um you know everybody’s trying to break down what it looked like and I’ve warned most people you’re not going to know how good he how well he feels how good that wrist is until you see him in in a real live 11 on11 session during training camp where uh there’s a pass rush and you know the the thing is he’s not going to get hit that wouldn’t ha happen anyway whether he had a wrist issue or not but there’s still a live pass rush there’s bodies around him he has to be aware of those bodies and there’s going to be a window where he’s going have to rip a throw into a tight window I think that’s when you’re going to start to know how good is that risk the other thing and I I I hate to warn it because this was a serious serious risk surgery this wasn’t just you know you or I falling off our bike at age 11 breaking our wrist and it gets healed up and we’re all good to go for the rest of our life this was a major surgery um the fact that he threw I think was a positive sign I you know I wouldn’t have even I if we didn’t see him at all in the OTAs or the mini camp throwing I don’t even know if I’d have been alarm so I I guess I’d say it’s a positive that we did see him throwing at a schedule where he expected to throw he you know he said at an event back in April he expected to start throwing in May right and that’s kind of what he did he was probably throwing inside before that you know when we weren’t around but the first time we saw him was in that may practice and all those things looked pretty good to me but don’t forget you know he’s going to get hit in a game right he’s going to have to brace his fall with that wrist at some point right I and that’s where again I I I think it’s going to be okay I can’t say with any definition and I’ll be honest with you if you listen to Joe in his last press conference he doesn’t know either he really does I think he’s feeling at least hey I’m making progress um there’s some good days and bad days he knew that was going to take place to his credit um you know he’s been very open about admitting how he he rushed himself back from the calf and didn’t listen to his body and he’s trying to listen to his body more and you know him taking days off and kind of forced by Zack Taylor to take days off I think was good for him um and and honestly for Zach to be able to say listen man I am the head coach I know you try to fight through this stuff but I need you to sit down for a day I know you say you feel good we’re g to sit you down we’re gonna get on a nice little easy program so truth be told we’re not going to know I think the good part is um you know between the time otaa ended mini camp ended and the time we healing process right so I I I do I’m looking forward to that very much yeah the thing is with with this wrist surgery I mean it’s not uncommon for football players but it’s very uncommon for a quarterback to have this rist surgery he as far as I’ve read and and and and listen to other people talk no other quarterback has ever had this type of surgery before so we’re like you said nobody’s going to really know until you he really starts playing but I mean you do like seeing he’s throwing and it’s it’s funny but you sit there you want to see you know the finish and you’re seeing that and all that’s that’s all good stuff but we’re really not going to know until we really get going um the thing is that I want to get back to your point where you said um that Joe is listening to his body more let’s go back to the calf last year we all kind of brushed it aside when we saw the calf sleeve sure on well obviously there was something wrong with his calf I mean they can stay whatever they want you don’t wear a sleeve on your calf and there’s nothing wrong with it so obviously Joe had something there and he just ignored it and said you know I could fight through it like you like a normal football player they all fight through stuff and that you know really he ended up aggravating whatever happened before I think that going through what happened last year is helping him with a better perspective of this year of of how to listen to his by take days off like you said I don’t care if he throws in mini camp it would have mattered to me you know I mean everybody would have freaked out the point of the matter is long as he’s throwing good and he’s healthy by game one that’s the whole point the rest of it doesn’t matter now to that point which I titled the the the show here is do the Bengals need to get up to a good start I say yes how do they do that with baby not I would say baby and Joe but you know bringing Joe along slowly along with a new right tackle and you know a whole basically a whole new tight end room and to get off to a faster start unlike we haven’t seen this in Zack Taylor’s coaching history we haven’t seen us get off to a good start or a fast start at all how do they do that because the schedule makers gave them an easy first month other than Kansas City they did I mean they really did and it’s up to you to take advantage of it as a team I mean there’s no excuse for for not winning that first game and then you know the second game if you win it it’s a it’s a huge feather in your cap but if you don’t it’s not the end of the world it’s Kansas City on the road um you know it’s Bengals will be an underdog in that game so they don’t get off the good starts either so yeah well correct that’s true too and then the other two games in that month are are extraordinarily winnable including the road game but arguably the worst team in the league in Carolina so you should you need to get off to a 3-1 start you should get off to a threein one start if you don’t it’s not the end of the world but I think it would be a little bit alarming but um listen I I I think this if Joe burough starts game one it means he’s fully 100% healthy I mean that’s what that means they’re not I don’t think you’re starting a even a 90% or an 85% Joe Burl I just don’t I think it’s going to be if he’s 100 % healthy um he’s starting that game if not he’s not starting that game and Joe bur 100% healthy they are winning that game and getting off to it the very least of three in one start barring again crazy injuries through throughout camp and you know other than Joe they don’t don’t seem to come down with a ton of them because of the way Camp operates and I think it’s they’re they’re more comfortable with Joe not starting game one with the emergence of Jake Bryan last year than they were the you know beginning of last year and I’ll be honest with you and and I you know I wondered this aloud if it’s not been asked it’s probably not fair to ask but to your point um there’s no doubt that he had something wrong with him on that second day of practice he tried to fight through it he even said hey that he told us you know back a couple weeks ago that’s what my whole career’s been about is outworking people out out toughing people and and Len if that’s your mindset and you’ve done that and done it successfully I I get it until now you listen to your body because it’s sometimes is telling you don’t go and I do wonder if even he had doubts about Jake I mean honestly we had never seen Jake in an NFL game nobody had seen Jake in an NFL game he hadn’t played in one he hadn’t taken an NFL snap so I I do wonder if if maybe he regretted that and maybe not trusting Jake enough and now that he’s seen it you can trust Jake to go in and win games for you well exactly it’s kind of like um they would say Marvel L say I I see better than I hear and I think Joe does that with uh Jake and then with just receivers in general I mean if you drop a couple balls Jo is probably not going to come back to you as quickly you know see see see IR Smith and Mike Thomas right exactly so I mean that that’s the thing it’s like so so with that being said I think Joe burrow and the Bengels are way more and the fans too way more comfortable with Jake Browning starting game one if Joe burrow is not 100% I agree with you if he’s not 100% ready to go then Jake Brown play and this is the exact opposite of what I said last year because what I last year I took an 85% Joe Burl over 100% Jak Brown that’s what I said last year it’s completely flipped now yeah no and and it and it it compromised their start there’s no question about it I mean I don’t even know you know would Jake browny have gone to Cleveland and won that open I’ll be hon would 100% healthy Joe burrow had gone to Cleveland in that opener and won no but I know this a a compromised Joe burrow had no chance to go win that opener in Cleveland last year yeah exactly exactly now that being said um this this division uh has it’s gotten uh better um The Raven we keep hearing about all this talk about about uh the the the running game and all this stuff King Henry’s there and yeah I think it’s a great fit but they’ve also lost a lot they lost some key defensive player a lot of people on their offensive line I I does that bring the the the Ravens or I call them the rat birs does that bring them back a little bit in the P or you think King Henry is that big of a difference and they’re gonna be that you know explosive in the running game that’s that’s they’re gonna be to make up for the the what two offensive linemen and Ron Smith has gone to well I I know this listen when Lamar Jackson’s healthy they win a lot of regular season games I mean it’s pretty simple he is the difference for them and a healthy Lamar Jackson is a Difference Maker Now Joe’s beaten a healthy Lamar Jackson before but a healthy Lamar Jackson in the regular season again he has not had great playoff success but he’s had great regular season success they win a lot of games without him they don’t um and and so I think I think it’s still a very good roster he’s still a Difference Maker um you know Henry is the best running back he’s probably played with I mean you could argue maybe a healthy JK Dobbins but but how healthy was that um and obviously at this stage of Henry’s career but he’s still a very effective running back um he doesn’t have to run it 25 times a game any longer because some of those runs are Lamar’s runs um so yeah healthy Lamar Jackson’s a big difference maker to me I still would put them at the top of the pecking order just because of what they did last year the Bengals would be extraordinarily close to that I mean you could flip flop it um and then probably Cleveland and I’d put Pittsburgh at the bottom because I just think that quarterback situation is going to be an utter mess yeah you you read my mind that that was the next I was going to go through is a square because when they say you have uh two quarterbacks you have none no that’s absolutely right yeah and from what I’ve heard excuse me some of the uh uh Pittsburgh writers writing about uh uh Justin Fields is basically everything they said his problems were in Chicago are true he’s not accurate he do have good ball placement and that has not changed and and and so it’s pretty much it’s it’s um oh jeez I can’t think of the other quarterback’s name um R Wilson thank you Russ Wilson’s job to lose and Russell Wilson honestly did not have that bad of a season last year to be honest so I mean that this could be a good fit for for them but I still put the the Bengals ahead of the Squealers you know I don’t think it’s it’s even close to be honest yeah now I I will say I thought Pittsburgh did a great job addressing some other parts of it roster and I think it’s better as an overall roster but that quarterback situation just seems untenable um you know if Russell gets off to a bad start and they get off to a bad start how quickly do they pull the plug and then to your point is Justin Fields really ready to take over a playoff caliber team I mean I’ll be honest with you I I think in a perfect scenario and it’s not perfect in Cleveland either because Deshawn Watson was a train wreck before he got hurt and honestly you know maybe him getting hurt helped their playoff chances but that’s still a really good roster I I would say I mean all four of these are playoff caliber teams but you know all four cases the guys that we’re pointing to are really the the main guys I mean if Joe burrow goes down for an extended period of time can Jake win games for an extended period I think he could win games but for an extended period um you know obviously the deshun Watson situation and what but what is he I mean he looked awful Rusty last year and um you know the injur is not going to help with that rust because he sat out more games and obviously the situation in in uh in Pittsburgh is is is a bit Goofy and then um you know if Lamar gets hurt we’ve seen they’ve had a hard time winning football games when Lamar gets hurt so um you know we all know quarterback is the key position in the league um and these are all good rosters in addition to the quarterbacks but it really is dependent on what what the quarterbacks do for each of these four teams in the case of three of the four it’s what they do from a health perspective exactly and you can say that for for you know they said the quarterback is the most important position in sports which I I I agree with that I mean you lose your quarterback and I’ve said and that’s where’s my my argument for the last couple years everybody a really good backup which I’m like yeah you do but I mean if you’re if you’re gets hurt and he’s done for the year the season’s over I mean Jake Browning played really well and I think if go not would God forbid Joe doesn’t get hurt this year but if Jake Brown has to played for extended period of time yeah I think he’ll play good do I think he lead us to the playoffs or anything that it depends on how the season goes I’m not I would not put money on it I’ll put it that way yeah I you know um I do think you have to have a capable backup and the Bengals didn’t know that um you know and sometimes you luck into one right I mean San Francisco really didn’t know what it had had in Brock py so it had to throw Brock py out there and need 32 other teams skinny no right that’s right no that’s EXA and so yeah sometimes you do have to get a little bit lucky on on top of that as well which they did but you know paying two top quarterbacks that’s that’s hard to do and you I don’t think you you need to do that I think what you need is a capable backup and I think we would all agree watching Jake browny last year he was he was very much a capable backup who truthfully could probably start for eight to 10 teams in the league absolutely absolutely all right I’ll bring this up here uh Robert has uh where was it at about Tomlin uh all right is uh I never doubt Tomlin not going to start now still the toughest division to leag all right so my question Tom all right everybody says Tom is a great coach we got together it which I do I think he’s a great coach and yes he hasn’t ever had a losing uh record but when was the last time he won a playoff game well and that’s a that’s a fair point and I think you know there is something to the consistency of having winning seasons but you know there’s some points in in in the NFL especially where you know bottoming out isn’t an awful thing you know staying kind of in that mid pack range I think you see that in other sports too I mean it’s why there’s tanking that goes on in the NBA that um you know if you’re not a playoff team and you’re consistently in that 500 to slightly above range yeah can you get in the playoffs now and then yeah are you good enough to win playoff games probably not and then you’re not in that mode of well it’s time to rebuild and I don’t think they’ve gotten to that now again that’s maybe a credit to their roster building um you know Baltimore really hasn’t gotten to that point either um but Baltimore’s done I think a better overall job of roster building so um yeah he’s a he is a great coach there’s no question and Robert took the words out my out of my mouth he said the same thing about Marvin Lewis and that that was kind of my point I was going to Marvin Lewis was a really good regular season coach playoffs not so much I mean Tomlin that’s what you’re Define by I mean yeah I mean he won the Super Bowl yeah but it wasn’t his players I don’t care what anybody says it was it’s been a while I mean yeah it’s what have you done for me lately and and what have you done for me lately is always going to apply and yeah Marvin did great things in Cincinnati but Marvin didn’t win a playoff game and and that’s forever you know part of his legacy now rolling back to I want to get your opinion on this I’ve asked a couple different people this all right so so we had the Ring of Honor and uh I voted for Cory Dyan I voted for Lamar Parish uh you can vote for whoever you want but hopefully you vote for Cory Dylan um with that being said I did once we I would mine was if I had if I had a vote I I Lamar Parish was clear to me I’ve made this case I got I got I got I got Lea Lamar yeah yeah I mean people just please go to YouTube and watch what he did just go look up he was just rid I’ve said he was Dion Sanders before Dion Sanders we had two of the best corners in the league they should both be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame but I don’t think lear’s getting in but I I’m with you and I I would agree on that point and and this is G I don’t want to bmer Ken riy there’s a reason Ken riy had a lot of interceptions because fewer passes were thrown at Lamar Parish it’s just a fact both of them were great I mean yeah no no question about it I I if I had a vote my other vote would go to James Brooks I I love Corey I mean we’re we’re we’re doing apples to oranges because they both did different things Cory was more of a Pure Runner and had to carry the load and carried into eight-man boxes and James was certainly a strong back but you know James didn’t get as many touches in a game but James is also a better pass receiver James was arguably and you can ask any Bengal of that era or guys that coached in that era um one of the best blocking running backs in the Run game and in the pass protection game he was just a better all round back um I Cory Cory deserves to be in at some point I I just would make the case James Brooks is is the best allaround back in Bengals history we’re splitting hairs because again Cory Dylan is probably the better pure run they need to let us pick four because they we’re gonna we’re going to have too many people because eventually and this comes to my point eventually we’re gonna have to AJ Green have to be voted on yeah wiw worth all now my question is for before you go on my question for this and people have have me into the ground about this is Andy Dalton Ring of Honor worthy I say yes five straight playoffs that that is the most successful period of time for five straight years that the Bengals have ever had when he left he was leading in almost every category of passing for quarterback you yes you can say all you want about him but he was a legit good quarterback and he was he is in your top five quarterbacks I think go ahead yeah I mean if I rank Bengals quarterbacks and again this is my own personal opinion people can slay me for it Ken Anders ‘s number one Burrow’s number two and by when all said and done burrow is going to be number one but for right now I’m going to go with Ken Anderson he’s accomplished more um to the you know more in his care he played played more um you know Joe’s number two Andy Dalton’s number three and Boomer’s number four that I I think Andy certainly Boomer’s in I think Andy would eventually deserve to get in to your point though and and um you know they didn’t add names to the ballot this year ice and I don’t know if they’re going to do it next year maybe the year after you start seeing some of these names pop in I think they’re trying their best to get some of these older players in um you know I I wrote a column when they came up with the idea yeah right I mean I think I don’t know if lap ever gets voted in I think they just should put him in to be honest yeah I agree he should just be automatically in he Mr bengle yeah I I really wish I wrote this when they decided to do the ring on or we a lot of you know we all pushed for it anybody was a Bengals fan or a Bengals media member it was it was a no-brain or an easy thing to do and it’s been it’s been great I just wish that initial class would have been something around 8 to 10 just get a bunch in and then you still got plenty of guys still to vote for then to your point at some point Andy Dalton’s on the ballot AJ Green’s on the ballot Gino Atkins is on the ballot Carlos dunlap’s on the ballot you know you mention withworth yeah I mean there’s a you start to go through that Litany of of of those players and so um and obviously with this current crew um they’re not ready to retire yet but you’re eventually gonna have Joe burrow on that bout and Jamar jaay on that bout I mean that bins right yeah I mean so we’re not gonna run out of players that’s the thing we’re not going to run out of players that’s correct that’s correct and that’s that’s the thing that for somebody it seems like the bangos feel like we’re going to run out players and the thing is what I don’t want to happen is I don’t want the players to not be here to enjoy this like I mean Bob trumpy is he is he 79 80s I say I think yeah I was gonna guess 80 yeah I think 80 I mean and Bob trumpy go look YouTube go go watch his highlights he I mean he to in my opinion is the first receiving tight end that made an impact he and he he and John Mackey probably were two two of the ones in that in that 60s era Mike did was more of a power receiver but trumpy was one of those first tight ends he and John Mackey that could really stretch the field I mean they played Bob at wide receiver some they didn’t play him all the time as an inline tight end so to your point yeah I mean that that was my hope I mean it breaks my heart you know that that Ken riy didn’t get to see the Hall of Fame when he was alive it just it absolutely breaks my heart and it would be heartbreaking if you know a Lamar Parish doesn’t doesn’t get in this year and something happens to him and to your point on trumpy I mean these guys aren’t getting any younger um so I I would love to see these guys get in and be able to enjoy the moment as opposed to it’s just family members who see it and and you know it it would mean even more for the family members to see their loved one go in that’s the it mean more to everybody that’s where I’m like like we got to at least get at least four and I I I brought this up to Jay Morrison yesterday I said I said what what I said you change up you can have the the Bengal players four players or Ring of Honor members they could vote on somebody or something or just let it be all the fans vote for four of them I don’t care just open it up you got too many players and they’re getting older and we want them to enjoy this you know yeah and again with an initial big class it it it and I I think the debates are fun right I mean like you like your your vote was Corey Dylan mine thank you for that trumpy 79 Brad chimed in um you know your vote’s Cory Dylan my vote’s James Brooks I don’t think I’m wrong I don’t think you’re wrong right if you have four put both in You could argue go back to an original class at least one of those would probably already be in so so you wouldn’t have to be debating it at this point like cool is they could have like done the uh the Mount Rushmore of of Bengals you know Anthony mun Paul Brown Ken rally I you could put James Brooks like I would say Cory doug because he’s the alltime leading rusher now but and and I love James Brooks when I was a kid I mean he was him and iy in the backfield was phenomenal so this is no shade on James Brooks ever I mean he he does not get the the accolades that he deserves of how good James Brooks was with his side he had the Speed he had the agility I mean he’s how how tall was he was he six foot no 59 510 and and he like you said to your point he could take on linebackers and Stonewall them Stonewall them yeah so I mean he could do everything James Brooks does not get the praise he deserves and this goes back to if won a damn Super Bowl these guys you know would would would get them more praise Lamar Parish if we like I said this we had this conversation before I thanks skinny if the they had more playoff teams in the 70s the Bengals would have been in the playoffs multiple times I mean there’s there’s argu argu argument that they had a better team in 76 I think 765 75 75 then the Steelers did yeah in fact you mentioned Jay Morrison and we were talking about the list he did for pro football network the greatest quarterback the the ranking running back and he did teams and I I I think anybody be hard pressed to debate the 88 team was the best of all I said you know what I got a sneaky number too and he goes I said he said was it on my list I said yeah it was further down and I get what you did I mean the Super Bowl teams probably deserve it right I I I understand some of that the 75 team went 11 and3 they lost a s they lost a game at Cleveland when it was a kind of a trap game they had just played their first home Monday night game against Buffalo won that game in Prime Time had to go on the road to a wful Cleveland team that year um coached by Forest Greg actually and they got upset it happens in the league right they got upset 3523 the other two losses that year were to Pittsburgh arguably that 75 Pittsburgh team again arguably is the greatest team in NFL history it’s at least from a single season you can make some other the Bears and some others the pick a Patriots all around Team all around team that the Bears is defense yeah go go look at all the Hall of Famers off that 75 I hate to sque and the Bengals that that was two of their three losses that year they had beaten in Oakland at home that season had to go out to Oakland in a playoff game because they were the wild card team unfortunately lost a tough one and uh yeah that that team go the teams of 75 and 76 uh passer rating is is one that I know people don’t like the Met but it is a metric to gauge passers what whatnot um and again it was a different era in the 70s um it wasn’t leather helmets and single wing football they did throw it around but not like they do today the Bengals pass defense passer rating those two years I think one year that was 47.6 not completion percentage passer rating I mean Joe burough is around a 100 is a passer rating that’ll tell you the the difference the other year was like 48 that’s how good that Lamar Parish Ken riy secondary um was back then Tommy Cova part of that too I mean those were that was that was a great great team exactly exactly now um I forgot about this I I actually tweeted Cory this but uh Paul here says anybody mentioned that any NFL released two minutes of Cory Dylan highlights on X I I did not see that I don’t know if that’s if if that’s correlating to maybe a Hall of Fame push for him um you know remember Cory made a fuss what was it last year where he um he was upset about not being in the Bal R that’s how this whole thing for him started that’s how that’s how this whole thing started for him all my show we all reached out to him go and yeah and I’ll be honest with you I mean I’d say it to his face because I wrote it um I think he’s got a better case for the Hall of Fame than he does for the Bengals ringer honor at the moment that’s why I think James Brook’s ahead of him his case for the Hall of Fame isn’t just the Bengals career all the stuff he did in New England Plus winning a Super Bowl I right yeah he’s s SE rush and won the Super Bowl if they don’t have Cory Dylan they don’t win that Super Bowl I go look at the numbers it’s not even close yeah good yeah I mean again the body of work here in and it’s weird the body work here in Cincinnati at the time he complained about not being in the Ring of Honor I thought there were more guys ahead of him at that point that deserved it he he made it a farce of well John Kel get him before me no John kitten is not getting in dude you’re you’re gonna get in but at the point he said it I thought there was a better case for him to be made that that he should be a selected the Pro Football Hall of Fame and maybe that that maybe this releas is uh on Twitter that the highlights are trying to prod some voters in that direction maybe well the thing is though it’s like like there’s three guys that I think have a legit shot and should be inord the bangal one Ken Anderson There Will Anderson Cory dy I think honestly I could get make a case for Lamar parish and other Isaac Curtis there’s other guys I don’t honestly think they’re going to get in I just it’s there’s too many other people ahead of and stuff like that go ahead I think I think Willie gets in um this next go round last year yeah he’s been I I thought he was too in fact I pre-wrote a story just in case he did because I really thought it was leaning in that direction um you know Jeff Hopson of bengals.com is the guy in the room he pushes really hard for the candidates and and does a great job doing that and I I called him the night before I said what do you think he was I’m getting a Vibe he’s not and I said well maybe next year he goes I think he’s getting closer so I hope that’s the case well I mean thing is like and there’s no I I don’t mean a shade on Joe Thomas but the the the thing that people say you know well Willie didn’t get in cuz because the Bengals didn’t win a lot Joe Thomas and the Browns didn’t win [ __ ] and he got in first ballot and I think Joe Thomas deserves it I know I think he deserves it I do but don’t give me this crap that well we he didn’t win enough to get in well how the hell is Joe Thomas in if Willie’s not will he retired before him that’s correct I mean no and again I think Willie I I think Willie is really is knocking on that door enough to where this year he knocks it down hopefully we have both of them because we gotta get Ken Anderson in there because I mean NFL MVP Man of the Year back to back uh NFL passing leader in the 70s and 80s and 80s I mean yes and so I mean he’s got the numbers I mean it’s not again he should have already been there I say this every single time and I every time I bring this point up for some reason I cannot remember his name but the quarterback for the San Diego Chargers that yeah Dan FS Dan FS he’s in what Dan FS win well and to Dan Fels is credit he’s one that believes Ken Anderson should be in the Hall of Fame too he’s mentioned that numerous times so yeah and I don’t I don’t get why he hasn’t gotten clo I mean he’s getting closer but I mean he’s been retired since 1986 I was 11 when he retired I’m 49 he should have been in 20 years ago skinny no I I don’t disagree with that whatsoever and and uh again I don’t know what the hangup is I really don’t I don’t either it’s it’s it’s just it drives me nuts all right let’s get to the Bengals of today um over the past weekend uh couple news T hiin signed his tag and I’ve asked pretty much everybody on on the my guest on the show this week are you surprised that he signed it this early because I am I thought he would show it more toward the end of the camp yeah I am and I’m not so I I I want to be I want to be fair to what I’ve said before so I don’t want to backtrack I I I I thought it would be sometime in August I never thought he was not going to sign the tag he was always going to sign the tag um but but after he after the the news broke this weekend it became official on Monday it dawned on me a conversation from from last year um it was during OTAs he missed the first couple remember last year was again that’s kind of the contract extension talks and you’re going in the last year contract um you know that’s usually when guys kind of pull that I don’t want to be at OTAs I don’t blame them I mean freak stuff can happen and I’m not costing myself a fortune with a freak injury and a voluntary workout so I get it so he showed up after a couple of weeks and I literally he was you some days he’s not willing to talk and that’s fine and but he was willing to talk that day and the first thing I asked him was I said what are you doing here you don’t have to be here and I kind of phrased it like that he kind of looked at me as man I want to work on my craft and I thought okay all right I see you um you know you you did your thing for a couple of weeks to show whatever leverage you had and I truly mean I think he meant exactly what he wanted to do was come work on his craft so I think this whole thing of him signing it now was him coming to the realization of listen this is why push this into you know into August there’s no reason it’s not going to benefit me it’s not going to benefit the team once I sign it um if I get hurt uh they still owe me $21.8 million so the fear of that is is long gone and I truly think he’s a guy that want wants this season to be a success for him and for the team and and him knowing the best way to do that is let’s get there from day one a training camp and let’s get it on from there and so again did it surprise me yes because I did think to your point I I’ve that’s what I’ve said all along so I I don’t want to you know go back on on what I said right but in thinking of this when he did I thought you know he really does want to make this work in the best way possible for everybody and I think he realizes the best way is you know the offense is changing a little bit um know not a lot of bit but it’s changing somewhat in what Dan pitcher is trying to do and honestly understandably so I mean it’s the concepts are the same but they’re changing some wide receiver packages and groupings and whatnot and I think he wants to be on the ground floor of that and hit the ground running with that so I think that’s a real credit to te and and I mean that because again he could have just simply said I’ll be there about August the 8th have a good time everybody uh you guys sweat it out I I’ll be ready when when the bell rings and and H I’ll be honest if he’ had done that I’d have been perfectly fine with it too and gone he’ll be fine he’ll be ready but I think it shows literally how much he does want to win how much he loves being around the guys how much he loves the game and how much he understands me being there early is probably going to help me have a big season help the team have a big season and when all that happens I’m getting paid it’s not going to be here unfortunately but he’s gonna get paid and I think he fully understands that now with that with that point there and I agree with everything you’re saying there um because t one reason I think T came in early too for everything you said plus he needs to have a big season to get his big contct cont so with that being said the Bengals can still tag him next year yes they can now I don’t think they’ll tag him and keep him I think there’s more of a possib they might tag him and trade him what’s your thoughts on that I I don’t think it’s off the table um you know would it be a dick move maybe um because it takes some leverage out um but at the same time can you get some value it probably wouldn’t be the value you think you’re going to get um but yeah that’s right it’s better than nothing um so I don’t think it’s off the table by any stretch of the imagination I really don’t um you know you also if you’re the Bengals you have to swallow card knowing you’re going to pay Jamar Chase here sooner rather than later and if T doesn’t let’s just say that the the the the nuclear Ops would be the Bengals do that don’t leave themselves again theoretically this is all theoretical because we don’t know where the offseason’s going to head theoretically don’t leave themselves much wiggle room cap wise and then T calls their T calls their Pluff and says playing the tag I’ll do it again I it’s really interesting but again I don’t think it’s off the table to your point because it does give you an opportunity to get at least something of value in return for him and I do think somebody would make a deal it wouldn’t be over the top the Bengals this year the only way they were making a t Higgins trade they were quite clear about it was it would have to be something crazy over the top that you just could not say no to and teams just these they’re just not doing that and I thing is if just say for [ __ ] and Gago here he does they do tag him next year and he takes it he that means he’s going to make over 40 $40 million the next two years so that’s not chump change that’s that’s that’s pretty good and most people would take that yeah for sure all right so with um that being or talking about you’re talking about the T Higgins do you think there’s any chance that they sign and this would be interesting to me if they sign Jamar now and te’s on a tag do you think that happens or we wait until the off season for Jamar you know I know Albert Breer of Monday Morning Quarterback um I think tweeted a couple days ago that expected a Chase deal to come sometime before the start of this season and and I guess it’s a possibility I I don’t know if I see that I I um I I you know he’s again he’s under for those and I think most of your audience knows this but just to reiterate um you know he’s under contract through next year because they picked up the fifth year option so nothing has to get done right now and usually in the league and we saw with Joe burough I mean the same thing happened with him um could he have signed the extension you know before his fourth season yeah maybe um but it was never going to happen so they let him play through the fourth season had already picked up his fifth year option and kick the can down the road a little bit I don’t think it’s a bad thing for for the Bengals to Kick the Can down the road other thann does the does the wide receiver uh Market um get reset again does CD lamb reset it does somebody else reset it at that point do you put yourself in in more Peril of having to pay more money to Jamar Chase so um I’m interested I if I was a betting man I would say it gets done next offseason and not this one but but Albert’s really connected to agents um and maybe for him uh somebody’s tipped him off that hey they’re they’re getting closer and closer to to to some kind of a deal yeah exactly my wife is is traveling to Chicago and she knows what time the show is for some reason she’s blowing my phone up now well I hope it’s not an emergency I know that’s why that’s why I check my phone I’m like she’s not texting me I’m like so I don’t know we’ll see see what happens she text me back um so we’re I’m all disob um okay so with the offense that they have now and and pitcher being the new OSI and this is the best uh Titan room that the Bengals have had in the Jo burough era how different do you think I know you said it won’t be a lot different I don’t think it’s be a lot different but I do think there it’s G be different tweaks I think there’s going to be Jamar Chase moving around a lot more T Higgins might be moving around a lot more because you’re not going to have Jamar in the outside t on the outside TB on the inside you can have geki on the inside you can you know an tight Ed you can have Jamar on the inside or you have Jamar in the backfield and then you got Burton they is drafted what are they going to do with him I think there’s a lot in my opinion this is the most nothing against TB and and Mixon but I think this is the most offensive talent that jackpot has had since he’s been here yeah there’s no question um and listen the the original narrative on Tyler Boyd you know was gone after last year was who’s going to replace him in the slot is it Charlie Jones are they going to draft the slot guy to compete what are they going to do and then Dan pitcher at the combine was was asked a little bit about you know his vision for for Jamar and he said I’d like to get him in the slot more I’d like to move him around more and at that point the was more okay it’s not so much of who’s going to be the slot guy but how are they going to deploy whatever three receivers are on the field I around that’s the thing she move I don’t I don’t think you’ll see T in the slot primarily but um I do think you’ll see Jamar in there a bunch and I thinki is gon be the slot a lot and you’ll see maybe some two tight ends with gaseki and Tanner Hudson or gaseki and Drew sample to agel block or um J Jermaine Burton in the slot Jermaine Burt on the outside we saw Charlie Jones who it felt like was kind of pigeon hold as the slot replacement for for Tyler board we did see him in OTAs lining up as an outside receiver at times so I think you’ll see different why Andre yosibash is in that mix as well year this year what’s your thoughts on y yeah I don’t know about big but take that take that step maybe big years take that step put it that way yeah no I think he will too I think he’ll be more of a factor he’ll get more snaps and I think that’s the thing they can do is they can mix and match different Personnel groupings and instead of looking going well they’ve got this group on the field we have to do this no you say here’s the group we’re putting on the field you adjust to us we put Mike Kiki in the slot against your 59 180b slot Corner he’s going to run run either right by him or he’s going to overpower him physically with size um oh you’ve got a bigger slot Corner who’s 62205 and that you know he’s kind of more of a of a run stopping slot hello let’s put Jamar Chase in the slot good luck covering so I I do think a lot of this is mix and match Personnel wise and I think it’s mix and match honestly it’ll be mix and match week to week what they do exactly now with with that being said with the the the talent we have in the tiing room with draft Al and uh uh M uh M mallister oh who’s the other um ton mclin thank you mclin thank you yeah I I was thinking mosy that’s that’s a that’s a Chevrolet exactly all right with those two being drafted what does that mean for Tanner Hudson because Drew sample I don’t think he’s going to go anywhere I think they like what he does they sign him to a contract Tanner I know they they they signed Tanner to a a a contract but he is a a a special teams or I mean a practice squad member that they picked up did great last year but they had these two guys that they drafted that is if Al is healthy I’ll put it I’ll previse you that if Al is healthy and ready to go the season does Tanner Hudson make this team you think yeah I do I do I I I think that Eric all um is drafted for a future three- down roll I think they’re going to let him come along at whatever Pace he needs to come along at physically um you know then McLaughlin’s probably the fourth tight end a guy that’s you know going to that fourth tight end is 95 to 99% of the time inactive on game days but I think he’d be the fourth tight end in the room so I I I again I’m just surmising here I mean you could keep all five on the roster I don’t think you do I think you know he wind up probably putting all on the injured list um when all is said and done then mclin’s the fourth tight end or uh yeah I don’t think there’s a scenario Tanner Hudson doesn’t make it now if if all shows he’s healthy mclaughin shows he you know he he did set the Arizona tight end receiving record ahead of a guy named Rob gronowski so he’s got some pretty good pedigree there yeah I mean if the two rookies really show a lot Tanner Hudson’s probably shown enough that in Camp if it push comes to shove you could get a late round pick and and deal him I don’t think it’s going to come to that really you think they could get something for because nobody offered them anything really yeah no I I I do um I I yeah because and I think that would come at a time if a team suffer another team suffers injuries in C I mean that’s the other thing you you’ve given yourself a buffer for a lot of different scenarios um but to me if all of those guys are here I I think all would probably be a candidate to start on on injured reserve and um and and uh and they keep the four tight ends and Hudson’s one of the four yeah I mean that’s what I I I mean don’t forget you you me you mentioned you know when you get Joe Burrow’s trust you seem to stick around I mean I love you know Trent Trent Irwin doesn’t doesn’t look like much right Tren gained yeah no right he he gained Jerry bur’s trust absolutely you know Tanner Hudson gained Joe Bar’s trust and I think that goes a long way I I I’ll be honest with you um during that press conference it opened my eyes I don’t know if there’s a room for him on this team at wide receiver but he went down you know the fact that Jamar and T didn’t work you know he said gave me a chance to work some of the younger guys and he mentioned Three Guys by name and listen I you know you don’t I don’t expect him to everybody by name but Joe’s very calculated what he says and one of the names he named was shedric Jackson and I I we all wait oh so you like him so hey if Joe mentioned you by name he likes you so again I don’t know if there’s room for him to make the 53 but obviously Joe thinks he’s in the mix and that’s that’s a heck of a sign yeah right that that that’s you get Joe’s trust you’re going to stick around for a while just like you said ask Trent Irwin I mean and and and Trenton and I love Trenton not because he’s been on my show twice but I appreciate him coming on but he’s a guy who wherever you put him he’s not the fastest he’s not the tallest whatever he just makes plays when he’s in there you know he he’s always there and he’s always doing his job in the right spots and skinny you you need he’s you know I use the baseball term you know he’s a glue guy as uh Jim Day always uh makes fun of the not makes fun of but quotes the former Reds manager we need a glue guy Jim that’s what Trent Irwin is he’s a glue guy he does everything nothing spectacular but everything really good and he’s always where he’s supposed to be yeah I mean he’s the perfect fourth or fifth wide receiver that that listen he’s not good enough to to to start over the guys you’re projecting to start but he is a guy who when injuries happen and a guy’s nicked up you can go you know what Trenton will go make a play Trenton’s going to do the right thing for us and and you got to have those guys yeah exactly you you have to have that especially especially if Joe burrow trust him I mean that’s that’s I can’t emphasize that enough that that right there is huge all right one more thing before I let you get out of here and that you go dominate your daughters in Gulf um uh but my money’s on you skinny um I don’t know uh all right so hard hard knock is going to be different this year the Bengals be in it and it’s going to be on the uh AFC uh North which you know Zach said it’s the best division in football I agree with him I think it’s toughest division best division is this going to affect the Bengals at all because some people said oh it’s going to be a distraction I don’t think it’s be a distraction they have cameras in their face all the time what’s your thoughts on just hard knocks in general and the way they’re doing it and is it a distraction yeah I I would say Obviously they’ve picked the right division right they’re trying to pick a division in a playoff race and and all four teams I mentioned I think You’ agree with this they’re all playoff caliber teams I mean that the Bengals were the worst team in the division record-wise with with a 98 still finished about 500 that’s right so I mean they picked the right Division I I do Wonder there I mean there’s a lot of extra cameras around they want some access um you know Joe burrow makes it clear um you know he he does what he needs to do with us on a Wednesday um doesn’t talk the rest of the week he’s very quick in in production meetings with Network people because he he’s he’s his mind is literally on preparing for games if they want extra you know access for him I don’t think they’re going to get it I I do think that you’re going to see a lot of buttoned up from players uh because of all those cameras around because they know there’s National audience that you know are you a Ravens guy who in a locker room setting is going to be joking about the Bengals that week or a Pittsburgh guy joking about you know we’re gonna kick Joe Burrow’s ass um and not know that he was on camera but those cameras all over the place I think you’ll see you’ll see these guys be more buttoned up in my opinion you know that’s usually kind of a character-driven show um and I just don’t know if they’re going to get that in the thick of a playoff race I get why they’re doing it in the thick of a playoff but you know they had they had the story lines of the play of the playoffs though you know that that’s more where I think it might go true but I think you’re going to get a lot of uh a lot of very buttoned up interviews from guys during that course of the season I mean don’t forget the Bengals play the Steelers twice in that in that window um you think Mike tomlin’s gonna like his guy saying saying anything off color or again what I mean by this is is you know in a formal interview setting guys are smart mostly smart enough but suppose there’s a guy four lockers down that this this boom mic that they’re gonna have in there picks up right and suddenly he’s like I thought I was just saying it to this guy and it got picked up I mean honestly it it’ll be interesting to me to see how how the players and coaches handle that um I’ve seen them do do some I can’t remember if Max it or not but something similar to this in the NHL and leading up to the New Year’s uh day uh outdoor uh uh game yeah the stadium games yeah yeah the stadium games and and they they’ll they’ll follow follow the teams there for I know a month out or whatever and it’s it’s pretty interesting to be honest to to watch the the interaction getting on the bus off the bus you know all the dumb crap that happens that that’s mundane to them we find interesting so that that’s the thing tooo is I think they’re going be it’s going to be more interesting uh than people think CU I mean sometimes honestly we’re skting toward the end of Hard Knock it’s kind of like okay you know it’s the end of the season let’s you let’s get it going so anyway um I hope I don’t know if this is true or not I hope this I hope this is not but uh yeah sounds like bar that’s why I jumped on Twitter I didn’t see anything uh so uh if that is true uh prayers out for Barry Sanders absolutely uh I hope it’s not true true um yeah I they they just had the football life um with Barry Sanders and EMT Smith on last night I watched yeah I’m with you did you see the the was it run Berry run they had on that awes if if anybody wants to see one of probably in my opinion it’s either him or Walter pyton that I’ve seen in my lifetime the two greatest running backs Barry Sanders how he did not rip his acl’s or tear his his ankles where he’d stop and just go sideways I I I I I’ll never know but I prayers out to his family if that is true I hope uh everything is okay and they said oh ESPN just s it out all right so there you go so keep Barry Sanders in your thoughts and prayers because uh like I said he is uh an all one of the one of the greatest running backs ever in uh NFL history anyway skinny you’ve been on for 51 minutes I’m GNA let you go now what I let you to do all right you got to focus all right you’re you’re you’re you’re for all the old guys all right you’re going to dominate your daughters in golf you got it well my youngest youngest one I usually have my oldest one played in college but again she is uh you can still do it she’s she’s pregnant so she’s got a little bit of a is uh had a heart attack uh yes that that is awful hopefully he’s okay hopefully he’ll pull out of this um but yeah that that is kind of a sad way to end this show but Barry Sanders like I said in my lifetime him and sweetness Walter pton were the two best running backs I’ve ever seen uh just to watch if you’ve never seen highlights of Barry Sanders where have you been at Barry Sanders you can even ask Cory Dylan Cory Dylan says Barry Sanders is the best running back ever um he’s just an unbelievable unbelievable player out of Oklahoma State coming out of there 1988 going to the Heisman or win the Heisman and then go get drafted by the Detroit Lions and yeah I I really hope he’s okay uh like I said keep him in your thoughts and prayers as we head into our weekend we got a big weekend
