Break in a bicycle tour around the world because of document theft

The article is in Polish but here's the gist:

Mariusz Grabski wanted to cycle around the world in 2 years. While in Romania his documents were stolen during the night by whom he described as Gipsy childred (his words, oh well). He reported to the police and the perpetrators were found. However his passport was not retrieved. He offered EUR 500 reward for his document but to no avail. He went to the Polish embassy in Bucharest but was told that there's a 30 days wait time to get a new one. He went back to Poland to wait for the new document. He left the bike in Romania. He's set to continue the journey once the procedure is finished.

I don't know personally what's the use of a stolen passport but it seems that they didn't steal anything else or maybe he just doesn't consider it impotant to tell to the journalist.
