My LBS replaced the rear cog and chain on my 3 speed Brompton S3L. Now 1st gear is noticeably harder than before. Looking at the chain tensioner vs some other bikes (commuter so there’s usually a few others on the train) the chain tensioner seems higher than normal. The only thing I can think of is they’ve take off one more chain link than normal. It all works post change and doesn’t appear to be causing any issues but does this look right to you ?

Length of chain doesn’t change the gearing. I agree that this looks a bit short. It might make the chain run badly, which could add friction, but that would affect all gears equally. So your two observations aren’t linked by causality. I’d say take it back and let them figure it out.

  2. It doesn’t look right, I’ll check mine later but theres definitely something wrong
