after having German lessons for fun for the last 4 months I have been planning a solo backpacking trip around Germany to finally practice my German and get to explore one of my favorite countries I’ll be staying in a mix of hostels with friends and even a workway with a woman in rural Bavaria and I just can’t wait to take you along with me packing in progress let’s go to Hamburg I’m not going to lie I’m stressed I’m such an anxious Packer like I am just trying to think of every eventuality of what could happen on this trip like what I might need what I I need to wear like is it going to rain is it going to be really hot summer Vibes in Munich so I’m just doing my best to plan everything out and it feels so nostalgic to be using my backpack my backpacking backpack from when I was 18 and inating around Europe I’ve forgotten how efficient but small it is like I have to make sure that every single thing I’m bringing is essential is multi-purpose and it’s actually worth me lugging around on my back for 2 and 1 half weeks but I’m excited pcking guys initially I was in the wrong terminal so I had to run to get my flight only to realize that it was 2 hours delayed that is what I get for booking easy jet so I just wandered around the airport I bought some goodies for the fames hosting me and of course I watched the new season of Bridgeton I finally boarded the plane and I don’t know if any of you guys relate to this but the feeling of traveling is the most inspiring feeling in the world you’re just watching the world go past feeling so wonderfully small and insignificant and it’s like you rise above your worries for a second as you begin to leave behind your small corner of the world you get to see it with more perspective in the mirror of the new experiences you’re about to have you can look upon the routines of your everyday with fresh eyes I got a taxi because it was almost midnight and I got to practice my German with the tax driver and then I finally got to my friend’s house in Hamburg hi guys so I just got to Hamburg after 2 and 1/2 hour flight delay so I’m kind of exhausted it is 11:30 p.m. but I just got to my friend’s house and I’m pan packing and I’m trying to process the fact that I’m in Germany again like I’ve not been here since studying in Berlin and it just feels so homey I think especially since learning German more intensively the last few months like I just love the sound of the language I love that a taxi driver speaks German so I can practice my German and seeing all the signs and just the germanness like a bed with two blankets like one for each person that’s not something British in Britain we just will share a blanket and pretend that both people like it even though in reality both people like fighting over that blanket germs are just so practical they’re so efficient just each have a blanket clever this is just so nice such high lovely ceilings I just feel so happy and also makes me realize like how cramped I am in my tiny London room like there’s just so much space going to make some tea and then get in pajamas and sleep and then I can process the fact that I’m in Hamburg w [Music] love [Music] [Music] open air side by side we sway there in all the colors [Music] some wow if this is Hamburg then I want to move it all morning breakfast [Music] the summer berries [Music] wow the fresh sum ber I’m sure I would they taste so wow that does not compare to the ones you buy in the supermarket danash Mar [Music] talk to me and tell me all that you’ve seen Mary Lan has conspired to get me spontaneously on this boat full Taurus mode [Music] hello okay I’m just about to get off at V Huda Fair house and and I’m going to go explore a park and then meet up with my friend later at market and meet her mom and her friend which is going to be so nice I’m so glad I got on this boat I feel like I got to see so much of the city and I got to practice my ger with the people sitting outside Love chat about where they’re from it’s a slave for me J [Music] slave also if you guys are wondering how I learned German and what tool I would recommend I made an entire fire video which you can watch hear about my German language learning routine but I genuinely can’t recommend lingoda enough it is a dream for this video to be sponsored by them lingoda is an online language learning school that I have used for multiple years that I’ve recommended to all my friends you can take online classes with a native speaking teacher and a few people from all around the world in the class and it’s like a small group class atmosphere everyone’s always so nice you kind of have banter cuz you’re all kind of not the best at the language so you’re learning together and you can book flexibly on your schedule which was great when I was a student and it’s so nice having someone correct your pronunciation like my German pronunciation I feel like is pretty good because I’ve been learning always with the teacher I’ve had a class almost every week since January and the Improvement has been insane but if you really want to learn a language properly this summer and you have time to dedicate you want to learn language fast then I definitely recommend doing a Sprint or a super Sprint basically you’re dedicated you take a lingoda class either every day or every other day for 60 days so 30 classes or 60 classes and if you don’t miss a single class then you get 50% of your money back which is amazing I’ve done Sprints in the past there’s such good value for money and if you get the cash back you could be saving up to € 515 I think it is which is mad so if you’re interested in learning a language this summer or learning German then you can use the link in my description it’s an exclusive link you can’t find it anywhere else and it will give you a discount and it’s only valid until July 1st so if you’re really interested in learning language this summer you have until July 1st to get discount okay guys the bike lanes are not very clearly marked in Hamburg I keep accidentally walking into them and then being nearly run over by bikes half of me and how’s the in a to yeah wow they cool I don’t know if anyone relates to this but when you’re trying to learn a language it’s so hard when you speak and then like they know you’re not German so they just start speaking English to you and you’re like okay I’m trying my best for d v Von what’s words Von vas Von that’s wrong but whatever that’s won what’s remember I can’t remember the word for remember that’s ironic Kenan it’s not it but like I know these words but then when I need them they don’t come to my mind so stressful like ring what is the word for ring I wanted to compliment her ring and I was like I don’t know what ring is I was like ohine ring now we’re driving into a door you feel comfortable oh gosh I love that the sun is out like I wasn’t expecting no it’s perfect weather like it’s just so [Music] summer Mar tour guide everyone needs a Mar Lane tour guide love [Music] [Music] P why don’t you cuz I did the same just for you you don’t know how much I love you cuz you’re my home away from home away from home away from being [Music] alone we come get this [Music] [Music] yay today it’s the day like the day where the Euros are starting and Germany’s actually playing against Scotland so all of us are here gathered to this epic event I’m not going to reveal that I’m from the UK In This Crowd [Music] hello good guys it’s been so M I’m so exhausted I feel like we packed a week into a day like I’ve seen so many things there’s so much stimulation and so much being dropped in another language you know like anyone who’s ever tried to learn a language and who has lived in another country knows how exhausting it is to always be trying to interpret and translate and like use your brain to speak in that language like especially by dinner dinner was like pretty much all in German I was just so tired so I was like trying so hard to concentrate on everything that was being said so I could find the right words and even the menu like my brain was just not wanting to translate the words but it’s fine we got through we did it and then I went to watch the start of the Euros which is honestly so iconic that I watched Germany play in the euros while in Germany it did call my allegiances into question because they were playing against Scotland and obviously I have so many Scottish friends and Scotland’s part of the UK but I am not enough of a football fan to expose myself as from the UK in that setting so I was Pro Germany and it’s a good thing was cuz Germany were winning it honestly so much fun I’ve had the birth day I’ve met so many of Mary Lan’s family and people from her life her friends it was just so nice from a friend perspective to feel like I experienced a slice of her life also we’re so tired and kind of crazy so I learned this phrase from her do which basically means after tired comes stupid like comes dumb so when you’re so tired that you just stop thinking about what you’re saying you’re just like on PE Vibes and energy that is us I just started my period so I just have so many cramps but Mary Lane also just started a period like today as well so we’re very in sync but it’s kind of the least ideal timing for my backpacking trip cuz I just feel in pain but after my period I’m going to be thriving POC phase I’m excited for her okay we’re going to go to sleep and then tomorrow morning I think we’re going to watch Bridgeton in bed and just have a cozy chill one so [Music] excited that’s such a funny word I’m he’s so [Music] [Music] goodat take a train right just to see you right for I was just to pleas you you don’t know how much I need you cuz you’re my home away from home away from home [Music] alone made it to Cologne y I’m excited for a new city and I’ve been on that train for 4 and 1/ half hours so I’m excited to just walk hello yeah welcome to okay thank you is es failed okay my first first first impressions of cologne having literally just been to col help bof and getting off now at arens field is it’s sunny it’s so much warmer than Hamburg which I love I left Hamburg as a storm and rain went Inc coming so happy to be gone so far it feels so much like Berlin there’s graffiti and artwork everywhere people are walking around smiling and happy to smile at me and help me which I appreciate and look at all the cute artwork genuinely can’t wait to put these bags down I am just in so much pain today because of my period but I’m going to drop the bags chill a bit and then go [Music] explore this is so [Music] nice the guy I’m sitting with is actually really hot I don’t know what to do about it he’s cooking some rolls right now that’s hot boy material I am going to wash my hair because I’m so desperate I feel so Crim sweaty also guys you never believe I bled through my trousers so I arrived here with bloody trousers isn’t that so tragic and embarrassing but it’s fine you just have to act confident be like Oh I’m on my period like to get changed it’s not giving it’s not giving I’m going to wash my hair and have a transformation [Music] [Music] it sounds so familiar [Music] oh what is this yes yes exactly what movie is [Music] this wow that’s so beautiful that looks hard to play cuz it’s like both hands it looks hard to play not really [Music] yeah I feel like you need to learn some more Taylor Swift [Music] though this is the most fascinating Airbnb host I’ve ever had oh my gosh we’ve literally just been talking for 4 hours I’m in his Workshop he’s just showing me all the crazy things he has this is a microscope that you can use to just see the fibers of books and the ink and the colors of things and the textures of the sofa this is the cutest a be ever I feel literally like I’m in this cozy Hideway tucked up here looking out the room and the plants hi guys from beautiful col col cologne okay I’ve had the maddest time in Cologne so far wow so I am staying in an Airbnb with like people around my age I purposely chose this Airbnb because it’s kind of like a flatmate situation like you get to know the people here you like share a space apart from the room that I’m in and the guy who’s my host the guy who I was like he’s actually really goodlooking when I went into the shower I’ve just literally I haven’t seen any of cologne I have just spent time with him he has been so welcoming and kind like so generous he was making summer rolls with veggies and like rice paper rolls and he’s like oh do you want me to make you some and I’m like if you’re going to offer I will accept and so yeah he was making them for me and I went and had a shower and then I just sat at the table while he was making them and we had a long chat about our lives the whole life story our share love of traveling share love of learning and he told me that he has a workshop so he rents a space where he does artwork he does music and producing so he has a drum kit he has piano he has all sorts of wonderful things he has a perfume business he makes perfumes there and we were just talking and I was like wow I literally just want to keep talking to this guy like we just get on really well and he’s like oh do you want to come to the workshop and I’m like sure why not also I always trust my stranger danger Omer in these situations and my intuition was like this guy is a go retriever non-threatening lovely generous man so went to his workshop and he was just playing me songs and it felt so wonderfully childlike like he you know had like magnifying glass we were trying out like a mini microscope he also has a telescope which is crazy he was telling me about his birthday party we were also like trading German and English knowledge cuz he’s not like fully secure in his English and I’m learning German so that was fun I love the potential for goodness within Strangers Like if you approach strangers with open-heartedness and open-mindedness that this person could become a friend or could become someone that you can learn something from like every single human on this world has something that we can learn something from and yeah you just never know what can happen so I’ve had the best 5 hours the sun is almost setting so I’m going to go out wander around to a park see a bit of K maybe and then my friend who I’m staying with tomorrow has just invited me to go clubbing which I am too tired for I’m exhausted I’m on my period but I think I’m going to go to the pr so that I can meet her friends from K and practice my German and I just love like being able to tap into people’s lives for moments like getting a little window into their existence in these cities so I would like to tap into her window tonight that’s my plan so happy I just love backpacking I love this this like endless potential within every day I love the spontaneity I love having no idea what’s going to happen I love that because it’s me traveling with me I can just I can spend my time how I like based on where my energy is each day if I like someone I can spend more time with them if I want to spend time alone I can do that you guys should solo travel it’s great it’s empowering you just learn to trust yourself so much [Applause] [Music]

  1. Manchmal finde ich nicht die richtigen Worte, ich kann mich nicht mehr an das richtige Wort erinnern, verschiedene Wörter sind schwer zu lernen.

  2. I need to take the RE1 to University in Köln and it is always late or been cancelled 😅 So it wasn‘t much a surprise for me when you said the Train is not comming 😂

  3. Mich freut es so, dass dir Deutschland und die Sprache so gefällt! Oft übersehe ich wie viel schönes es hier gibt, aber mit Hilfe von Casual Magic entdecke ich immer mehr ✨🍓🦋

  4. Hey Jade, i´m a watcher from Passau 🙂 since I saw that you were coming near Passau, I was wandering if you're also coming to Passau itself. I study at University there and could show you around. Really like your Videos and your Vibe! Love, Hannah

  5. Lovely video, I'm learning German too because my boyfriend is German and lives there. Your German is really good and it's so good that you have the confidence to speak, I've been learning for almost 3 years and I'm still scared to speak, but hopefully when I go back I will try my best to speak as much as possible. You really inspired me in that aspect!

  6. This is heartwarming as I was meant to be doing the same. But health has got in the way 😢. Hopefully next year but can’t wait to watch your journey

  7. Wow lustig, bei uns in Süddeutschland heißt es "nach müde kommt lustig" xD ah Hamburg und Köln sind beides wunderbare Städte, ich hoffe, der Rest von Deutschland gefällt dir auch 🙂

  8. Dear Jade
I'm struggling so much to understand how you can at the same time say that you care about the environment and climate change… and taking an airplan from London to Hamburg which you can reach by bus or train within one day. :'( All this while hyping the experience of airports and air travelling. It makes me so sad. You have such a power as a role model of sustainable travelling. Can you explain me please? Currently I feel so lonely and lost with my concerns for the environment… Seeing you contributing to it is so hard for me. As I see you as an inspiration for myself and many others.

  9. Hope you have the best time! <3 I very rarely use the airplane these days for environmental reasons, but I can see its hard to miss out on traveling. You create beautiful memories with that! Just writing this for some extra awareness, train or boat are some of the best options <3

  10. Jade, In Germany we don't say, I love your ring or I love your dress. We say, "Ich finde, deinen Ring schön oder Ich finde dein Kleid schön".

  11. i lived in hamburg for an exchange year year when i was a 16 year old. it feels like such a fever dream now but this brought back all the feels. you even got off at my host family’s boat stop 🥹

  12. Good luck sleeping on the massive square pillows 🥲 That’s one thing I didn’t like about living in Germany, they always gave me neck ache and headaches 😂

  13. Jade! If I can offer some (non preachy, I hope) words of wisdom about talking to native speakers when you're not yet fluent: people want to alleviate stress or discomfort so they will switch to English if they sense those things. (Yes, you may also run into irritated people who are so over language students and don't give a shit. I'm not talking about them here.) Here are some ways you can project enough confidence to keep people in your target language: 1. don't correct every mistake, 2. try to avoid long pauses where you word search or work out sentences – instead, use simple grammar and simple sentences/words so you can speak at a normal pace (pace is so important), 3. Resist using a questioning inflection where you're unsure. This can be really hard and requires a lot of practice! So no beating yourself up if you catch yourself hesitating and questioning. Also, accent goes a loooong way in convincing people you can manage in the language. I'm not a German speaker but it sounds to me like you're already doing a good job there!
source: me, I live in a second language that I learned after I moved to my current country.

  14. Your videos make me smile so much! So many good vibes! And it's so much fun exploring my home country through the eyes of someone travelling. 😀

  15. I'm studying abroad in Munich this upcoming school year and am so excited. I have the same problem with German when trying to remember words. I'll know that I know the word but just can't remember it in the moment.

  16. im soooo happy you got to visit Hamburg. I grew up there and its so exciting to watch you explore and walk around the places i know so well (im from winterhude)

  17. It's opening my heart to experience your love for the German language and culture. I am from Hamburg but haven't lived there for almost a decade. I have never seen anyone being as excited about Germany as you. I am so touched by your love for my home.

  18. Hello Jade ! As a Greek living in Munich the last 2 years and although I am Niveau C1 they understand that I am a foreigner here and they still sometimes speak to me English 😂😢😢
