What is it, how old is it, is it worth restoring, 8speed Deore gears 3 speed at front, decent 90s forks, old muddyfox, very lightweight frame – I’m a qualified bike mechanic so I know how to fix it well and I get parts cheaply so tell me. How old is it

i think that its worth restoring just bc of the story. id build it up however was comfy.
It’s gonna be somewhere ’round ’96. Some expert will be able to date it precisely for you.
As it was your dad’s it would be cool to get it running safely and functioning properly, but it wasn’t high end and isn’t worth a real restoration. The good news, it that frees you to not worry about diminishing its collectability.
I’d use it as a casual ’round town bike; just get it working. It would be fine to switch out bars, saddle, etcetera to make it comfortable for you and something you’d ride more.
With the older suspension forks, it may be hard to find replacement wear parts, but again there’s nothing collectable here so there isn’t a reason not to switch out the fork if you need to rebuild it but can’t get the parts.
Probably late 90s not super high end but should be a good frame for building something nice. They had some really out there frames in the 95/96 era.
you should be able to date it more easily by that front triangle gusset.
