My dad spent his hard earned Bepis points 30 years ago and now I have the pleasure of breathing life into this thing.
What are some bargain bin upgrades I can make? I want to take it around town and on some single track trails.
So far I've tinkered with the rear derailleur and 9 out of 10 times it shifts pretty good, still haven't touched the front and it's about 50/50 if it'll shift when I tell it to. I put on a pair of used Kenda Kross to make it more friendly on the roads and still give me some capability off-road.
Give me some ideas please. No drop bars I'm not a fan.

My recommendation is to invest your hard earned dollars into restoring a different vintage bike. This one was a promotional item back in the day so in reality, you’re likely replacing almost everything but the frame. At that point you might as well get a decent quality frame from the 90s or so. Sorry OP. I just don’t think it’s worth it.
Now, if you just want to get it going again, then maybe just check and replace (where needed) grips, saddle, pedals, tires, cables and maybe brake pads. You can source used stuff for the most part but I would go new for the brake cables for safety sake. That in itself will run you some cash and given that the bike market is in the toilet, you can probably get a good quality functionally operable 90s MTB for around $100.
Choice is yours.
Go all out with the branding. I bet you can find bar end plugs that you could put a Pepsi logo sticker on. Get a safety triangle for the back in red or blue and put a pepsi logo in the middle of that. Red pedals and grips. White or red housing. Pepsi or bust
Give how blue it is, I think you need some red in there to play up the Pepsi a bit more. Maybe some red pedals or something like that?
Keep the bars and the stem, maybe the brake triggers. Replace everything else and you’ll have a killer street ripper.
