Was just inspecting my tires after some doomscrolling on this subreddit, found that I’ve caught a fair bit of battle scars on the sidewalls of my rear tire. It’s certainly not enough damage to warrant a new tire now (at least IMO), but if I catch a gnarly branch or sharp rock to this spot again I may be hosed and stranded in the middle of the trail. I suppose I’ll have to be extra mindful the rest of the season to wear down the remaining tread.

This brought some questions from me for the fat bikers community:

  1. Does anyone else experience this sort of wear on their rear tire?

  2. Is it even worth it to slap some gorilla tape on the inner side of this tire? This scrape would certainly ruin a tubeless setup, but since I’m not doing so my only concern is this spot or another bad one catching a sharp rock at the wrong time. If it did, I imagine the tape would do jack shit to stop my side wall from letting the tube bulge out.

  3. Does anyone know why did Surly stop producing a 26 x 3.8 Knard? I have been a fan of this tread pattern, but I’m not so tied to it that I would choose to downgrade to 26 x 3.0 (if it would even fit this rim, doubtful I’m sure). I’ll pick up a Nate and swap the front tire to the back wheel, my hope is that the current rear lasts at least through the end of this year.

I bet you can patch that to prevent it from blowing up, or at least rubber cement

I had luck with bacon on the side wall

  2. Are you running low psi? I had this happen on my karate monkey and I was running really low psi to soften up the full rigid action.

That’s common on fat bike tire. I bet you still got your money out of that tire.
