Maybe not the typical r/xbiking post but my mom used to ride this Univega MTB frame with aggressive geometry, narrow seat and flat bars all over Texas. She got it custom from a bike shop in 1989. It’s been in storage for decades and eventually ended up being stored at my place (the only homeowner in the family for a couple years) and left outside. When my mom finally divorced my abusive dad at 68 years old and moved back to NC I realized it was probably the last chance to give her a nostalgic gift and put some effort into sourcing a new wheelset as well as several other components to make the old, outdoors kept bike rideable again. Mom was overwhelmed with joy and out of all the Xbikes I’ve built, this is probably the most meaningful so far. All new 700c tires, derailleur, chain, cables, Vbrakes, saddle, the handlebars from an Electra townie, and the wheels and brifters from a Giant hybrid.

  1. That’s fantastic. Great that you did that for your mom. Bike looks good too!

At the risk of being the asshole – some Simple Green and a brush will clean those rims right up! 🫣 haha
