I’m heading out to do the EV 6 in Europe next May and need a touring bike. I currently ride mostly downhill and cross country so I’m used to flat bar. I have landed on two options…

1.) decathlon 520 (mostly for the price)

2.) Surly Ogre…

This is my first bike tour but I suspect I’ll love it enough to keep coming back. I am not keen on bike packing – so I want to stay away from extreme single track like Colorado trail but I don’t mind gravel (and hills!!)

My question is, will I be trapping myself with these bike options based on the variety of landscapes in respect to the Euro Velo routes??

What are your suggestions? I’d like to keep it in the 1000$-1500$ range Canadian. I’m open to drop bar but I have terrible shoulder/neck pain so that worries me a bit.

Thanks!

If anything the Ogre would be overkill for EV6. I find 40mm tires are the sweet spot to balance performance on asphalt and gravel/trails.

  2. I’d say the decathlon would be well suited for eurovelo6. Not sure how hilly it is but you could have a look at the decathlon 900.

The Ogre is a great starting point for a build but by the time it’s kitted out for a tour you will probably have blown your budget.
