I knew that it was going to be a cold bike ride, so I packed some cold weather cycling gear and clothing I might not pack on a more traditional summertime bike tour.

hello i’m darren out from bicycle turning procom I am in lumiose Sweden right now having just completed a month long bike tour from here up to the nordkapp in northern Norway and then back here to lumia sweden so during that month-long bicycle adventure I cycled through Sweden Finland and Norway about 2,000 kilometers now because I just completed that bike trip I thought this would be the perfect time for me to talk about my bicycle the gear that I used and the clothing and stuff that I brought with me so I’m gonna go over everything that I brought on this particular bicycle tour and one of the most obvious things that I brought with me is the bike so I’ll talk about the bike first the bike will let you see here is a commotion cycle Siskiyou touring bicycle it’s a high-end touring bike with a pinion gear box so all of the gearing for this particular bicycle is built inside the frame here in the bottom bracket of the bike in addition to that there is a carbon belt drive system on the other side of the bicycle so instead of a metal chain there is a belt there are no gears in the back of the bicycle although the gearing is up here and there are 18 total gears which is really really nice in addition to that the bicycle has disc brakes which are standard on the front and back of the bike and what probably makes this vegetable unique to many other bikes is that it has 650 B wheels and tires the same size is 27 v if you’re familiar with that but these wheels and tires are kind of in-between 26 inch wheels and 700c wheels so they’re a little bit bigger than your standard 20 seconds wheel and a little smaller than the 700 C’s that you might be used to so that’s kind of unique in addition to the bike I mean so this bike has SMS couplers on it which allowed me to split the bike in half and fly the bike here to Sweden on the airplane without having to pay extra because the bike folds up and fits inside of a suitcase so that’s really cool there are two water bottles two other ball cages on the front fork of the bicycle is an arc el lowrider wrap and on that rack are two or live sport packer plus bicycle panniers these are waterproof bags that I store all my stuffing I also have imported ultimate six handlebar bag here on the front of the bike which is a pretty big handlebar bag next door bunch of stuff and man I’ve also got a Blackburn atom for bicycle computer that I use to measure my daily distances and total overall distance for the trip and that’s a Wireless by computer it goes down to a sensor on the front fork on the back of the bicycle I’ve got an axiom rear rack mounted with two Portland bike Packer plus waterproof bicycle panniers and in between these two hangers and carrying a voltaic 6 watt solar charger and inside of case there’s a battery that is basically being charged while I’m cycling so that basically does it for the overall bike in addition to that you should take note of what I’m actually wearing because these things were with me as well so I had a hat that I wore off of the bicycle and I did wear this while I was riding I just put it on as soon as my helmet came off of my head in addition to the helmet that I was wearing I was also wearing this Jersey this long-sleeve Fox face in Jersey for pretty much every day of the trip the pair of just basic white black her League skateboarding shorts as well as wearing I have one pair of shoes that I brought with me on this trip and you’ll notice that I have the bike mounted with just flat pedals and not you maybe your SPD pedals they might be on some other two are in vegetables so I wasn’t able to actually the to the bike like it was on some other trips but I only wanted to bring one pair of shoes on this particular adventure so that’s the way I went I got socks I had three pairs of socks or so and then in addition to that I was wearing this REI rhyolite rain jacket for pretty much every day of the bike tour so all of this stuff was on my body every day so now I’m going to open up some of the bags so you can kind of see what I brought with me and I’m going to start with the handlebar bag because this is the value that I probably use more than any of the others so this is my or Club ultimate six handlebar bag and you’ll note that there are two small mesh pockets on the side of the bag and then there’s one big compartment inside which I’ll show you in just a moment in these small zippered pockets on the side I’ve got a number of things I’ve got a knife I’ve got some chapstick I’ve got a lighter for my camp stove I have small patch kit here with some spare rack screws and other things like that glue and sandpaper and stuff and then I have two plastic tire levers in case I get a flat tire on the other side I just have my multi-tool and I use that quite frequently then inside here you open this up and it’s basically just one big compartment here and I got a whole bunch of things in here so I got a GoPro video camera I have my smartphone which I use for navigation and entertainment on the road I got my lightweight pair of gloves at the bottom of the bag here in the center I just have my spare inner tube so this would go at the bottom and then my camera would kind of rest on top of it to absorb any vibrations from the road so that then I have my sunglasses case with my sunglasses or inside and the sunglasses would obviously be on my head writing I also brought a second small point-and-shoot camera that I was carrying with me so I had two cameras actually and then I had a pair of headphones earphones that I could wear at night when I was listening to a podcast or something in my tent I also in a zipper pocket inside of you it’s kind of hard to see but there it is and inside this little zippered pocket here I would carry my wallet I had a small journal that I could you know take notes in or get people’s email addresses that I met on the road I also had my petal wrench and SMS coupler wrench inside I had another small 10 millimeter wrench that I use to tighten my fenders and I have a pen for the journal and then on top of that I had a spork to eat with and any of the change from my trip that I picked up along the way to pay for things kind of went in here as well so now I’m going to take a look inside these two rear bicycle panniers these are the largest of the panniers that I’m carrying with me this one was carried with me on the left-hand side of the bicycle and this one was carried on the right so in this one I didn’t have a whole lot this was mainly my food bag but in here I was sharing my jacket my fleece jacket so it’s just this is the layer that kept me warm and I wear this both on my bicycle it is cold enough and also in my tent at night if I needed to I had a USB and universal power adapter to charge my electronics and then I had a bag a ziploc bag here full of battery chargers and batteries spare batteries for my two different point shoot cameras that so all that in one day and that’s basically all I had up here inside a small pocket on the outside of the pan yeah I was carrying my bike pump my rear USB powered bike light and a front USB powered bike light and that’s the other thing that was there this one pana in this other pan here I sharing all of my camping stuff so I have my sleeping mat this is the valid age so sleeping mat this is my tent which is a Big Agnes copper spur ultralight one-man tent I have my bike lock in here and probably the biggest thing that I carry with me on this entire trip is a winter sleeping bag this is a Marmot sawtooth sleeping bag so that’s everything that went inside this one pannier and then it’s everything going inside both of the panels on the rear end it’s my bicycle now let’s take a look at the front panel alright so these are my two front bicycle panniers mount all open them up so you can see what’s inside so this pannier I have a half roll of toilet paper and this is for blowing your nose which you need quite a bit in cold weather it’s also for going number two out in the forest so you got to have always like a half roll toilet paper I have my toiletry kit here so all of my toiletries toothbrush toothpaste deodorant bug spray everything inside of here I have a shirt just a t-shirt I have this is a fleece pair of pants that I would sleep in or just hang out inside my tent at night this is another t-shirt I had a warm pair of socks that I would wear inside my tent at night or sleeping in my sleeping bag I had several spare pairs of socks that I would cycle in so I’ve got a few of those down his moto pack I have one spare pair of underwear so I had two pairs that I would rotate between and then down at the bottom of the pannier I have my camp stove so it’s stove the pot and the fuel are all in this one bag I want to open them up for you now but it’s all in there I have a titanium cook pot the fuel canister is inside the cook pot and down here in the bottom I have an MSR pocket rocket stove so all of that goes in there so that does it for the one pannier I’m going to open up this second pan here front pan your now and you’ll see that I have a lot of my winter stuff in here winter clothing so I’ve got two gloves these are heavy-duty like snow globes that you would wear if you were going skiing or snowboarding which came in handy a couple times on the trip but I really did wear them that frequently and a beanie which was very frequently used almost on a daily basis just in my tent or around camp and sometimes even on the bike as well to keep my head warm I have a lightweight facemask that I wore on occasion on the bike to keep my ears warm face warm etc I’ve got a lightweight pair these are North Face rain pants they’re these pants aren’t necessarily designed for cycling I don’t have that all that did really for cycling but yeah wear these when the weather dipped a little bit and the shorts weren’t enough I also sometimes swept in the use it was really really cold in addition to the brain pants I also brought these heavy-duty like snow pants these are Patagonia snow pants like you would wear if you’re going skiing or snowboarding I only wore these a few times on the trip when I was wearing them I but I have you know I was going up to the Nordic at northern nervous is pretty cold there was snow on the ground a lot of times and he didn’t definitely come in handy and then finally I have a big kind of spacious down jacket this is a very warm jacket fill this down and I didn’t honestly wear it all that much on the trip I really just wore it in my tent at night or around camp or while I was sleeping but I it was kind of nice just knowing that I had it just in case so anyways that is everything that I brought with me on this bike tour not including food and water and stuff like that so obviously I was picking on food and stuff as I was going but otherwise that is everything I brought on my 2017 bike tour from lumiose Sweden to the north captain northern Norway and that through Sweden Finland and Norway so anyways that’s it guys thanks so much for watching once again I am there now from bicycle turning pro Tom I hope you enjoyed this video and I hope to see out on the road sometime soon
