Yesterday I did a roadie group ride on the track bike.
Some folks were not happy about me riding with no breaks down some gnarly hills (for safety purposes).
I was asked politely to put breaks on my bike next time I come to a group ride.
I’ve been riding fixed for over 10 years now , I’ve had this happened to me several times at other group rides where roadies weren’t so nice about it.
I’m getting chance to explain why I ride with no breaks on my friends podcast … with that said I have my personal reasons why I ride with no breaks but I’m interested to hear what this community has to say bout it. Thx guys.

What are your reasons for going brakeless? What is your reason for not just getting a front brake and not/barely using it?

It’s a safety reason. When riding in the paceline I don’t want someone with no brakes (inferior stopping ability) to be anywhere near my wheel. It’s common courtesy and etiquette to have brakes when riding fixed on the road. Nothing else is acceptable, regardless of how you feel.

And this isn’t me gatekeeping. You literally shouldn’t be on someone’s wheel or in front of someone in a group ride setting without a brake installed. If you were ok being at the back and not mixing it up in any capacity, then I would be ok with you riding in my group.

We have a lot of people here who don’t know anything about riding in groups of people in an A or B group. It’s not hooning around with the boys. Please do research and see why it’s important.

I’ll end with this: anyone who doesn’t want to use brakes, is 100% ok. Just don’t ride in an organized group ride. Anything else is selfish and self centered.
