I've been having a problem for about a week now. When I go to pedal backwards, to tuck the pedal in, the chain loses tension.
It was a minor inconvenience, but today the chain came off when I tried to force it. Chain is clean, clubbed, the whole drive train is reasonably clean.
A few weeks back, the sprocket ate a bungee cord from the rack, but the problem didn't start occurring until after that.

Should say chain is lubed rather than clubbed
What’s weird is that your wheel is going backwards when you pedal backwards. That feels like a problem with the hub.
Which is to say, the reason you can’t pedal backwards is because the chain is driving the wheel when it goes backwards (instead of freewheeling).
make sure the internal hub is in the 2nd gear before starting to fold 🙂 I guess you live in the top of a hill, and end always with gear 1? 🙂
Hey. I had the same issue. Basically the hub was destroyed after 2 years of not being careful when cleaning the cassette. Powerful degreaser had got into the hub, along with water.
Hopefully, the bike shop can just service your hub and you’ll be good to go. In my case, I’d left it too long. So I needed a new rear wheel. Expensive fix for negligence on my part.
This happened to me before. I did a full wash and lube job on the chains, cassette and derailleurs. Works like day one now.
In my case, a small thin twig was trapped. Check all the spaces between all the sprockets to see if anything has got stuck.
I had the same problem before. In my case the gear changing is not complete and I just unfold the bike then select the gear you want before folding it back but try to ride it until the gear change.
