Hi all,
I own a Fox rhythm 34 with a grip 1 damper. It has a lockout feature. There is no compression tuning.
It is controlled by a push to lock remote. Here's an example

When servicing the fork, I left out the spring that returns the lockout dial back to the open position.
I can now gently twist the lockout dial to partially lockout to make the fork more supportive.
My question is, is the lockout grip damper fundamentally different or is it just the top cap assembly?
Additionally, is running a dampner a few degrees back from full lockout likely to cause damage?
Cheers.

The Grip damper doesn’t have just on-off lockout; the big blue knob on the top with the lever is variable compression adjustment. Turning that knob varies the compression and has some detent points for presets (open, firm, and mid-point on some forks, or just open and firm).
You can literally read this here, page 5: [https://www.ridefox.com/dl/bike/605-00-161-34-Tuning-Guide-revA.pdf](https://www.ridefox.com/dl/bike/605-00-161-34-Tuning-Guide-revA.pdf)
>*The 2-Position Sweep Adjust (34 Rhythm forks only) lever is useful to make on-the-fly adjustments to control fork performance. Use the positions between OPEN and FIRM modes to fine-tune your compression damping.*
Are you meaning that you left out the spring/ball so you don’t feel the detent points? If so, all you did is make it easier to knock the knob out of open/firm position accidentally when you hit some brush or whatever.
And note that there is no “full lockout”. It’s a very firm setting that uses hydraulics to feel very stiff, but it’ll still blow off and compress on a big impact. It is not fully locked out.
