You’ve all seen me visit Europe’s Biggest Tool Expo in Koln, Germany! Well, I couldn’t resist scouting out the local tool stores to find more quirky an innovative tools you just can’t find in the UK! This week took me to OBI (Germany’s answer to B&Q) and I found so many new tools that I’d not seen before, I had to bring them back to British soil for you all to see! hey guys Jonathan here and today I’m at Obi One of Germany’s biggest hardware stores to find out what quirky tools and tool boxes these guys have got that we don’t have in the UK let’s go and have a [Music] [Applause] [Music] look so there we go recognize that CU brick I mean first thoughts are that is the exact same as the trend the trend has red latches and very similar to the ax tool Tre system also we got here ke so that’s the brand you see all over the world ke we’ve got some of the K connect stuff what else we can see 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 bits that’s fing genius is it must be popular that’s the last one it was just sat there that is genius I love these little like home brand tools cuz obviously cheap and affordable that’s the first winner for me though if I can find more of those I’m getting more of those I found the box that they came in no more left $7.99 so about £750 I think we just go home I think that’s that’s me satisfied with one quirky tool nice to see some sustainers out in the wild but obviously the rent tools here so this is like the rental section that’s pretty cool isn’t it you can’t rent tools from your local hardware store in the UK obviously there’s loads of tool higher places but they’re just here you can actually walk into this section put it in your trolley go rent it out that makes life a bit easier doesn’t it [Music] you don’t get this in the UK a big old rack of Gerber tools that’s my personal favorite there the arm bar just has literally a knife scissors and then a bit driver I do love that but no point buying another one so this must be their brand look their home brand it’s all blue with look written on everything but when you have like home Brands typically everything is pretty standard fact that they’ve got Z stocks over here is not standard you don’t see that in the UK this is like an aluminium one first time I’ve ever seen a metal all stock anywhere and it’s $15.99 so that is a quirky tool that’s going in the tool [Music] [Applause] collection this is an unusual site isn’t it you don’t see this in the UK it’s like tools piled on way we go couple of Z stocks so when I was in Germany last they had these ones with names on Ean har SV Josephine I know Joseph Josephine this all stuck is for [Music] you bit of power tools always interested to look at Makita hand tools see if there’s anything that we don’t have I am a Makita man at heart that’s where it all started for me so quality Makita hand tools and I would definitely be a customer of the entire range speaking to the Makita guys at the tool play in London I don’t think that’s going to happen what is this about a tool toot what is a tool to have you ever seen that a wearer like surprise goodie bag collect them all you reckon we get five and one for us six and you know what to do if you want to win one of these we will open one so you will have an idea what it’s going to be if you want one drop a comment like the video and subscribe that’s pretty good so that’s little babies’s all stock for Euro I’ll tell you what let’s get five good ones now that’s something they don’t have in meq big bag of potatoes big bag of apples you got you covered Mac Pack foam now that is something you never see out in the wild this is the official Makita insert it’s egg crate foam and then is it pick and plug foam yeah it’s pick and plug foam it was to be expected that isn’t an item but that’s a bonus whenever I see inserts out in the wild you never see this in England foam inserts are are not sold anywhere other than online we’ll get one even though I know how good it’s going to be we’ll match up to some Shadow foam see this is where you find the quirky stuff made in Germany I’m guessing it so you can use a level and make sure you’re getting a perfect 3° or 1° slope on a deck and the keita handle out in the wild it’s a bit steep I think they had Makita and tools in BQ for a while £750 they were and they were an 8 m tape this is the problem with Makita tools they’re always an apple p over and above the power tool so that is a dodgy little sticker there rothenburger I like to do a bit of rothenberger we’ve got some rothenberger hand tools I’ve not seen them for sale yet I’m sure I will cuz I do know they’re on sale in the UK don’t think I need any of that now [Music] and then this is actually what Drew my eye I think we’ve all seen these by now on wish Teemu these like Universal tools have you ever seen one that’s fixed into a handle like this and then look you’ve got an LED the gift that keeps on given isn’t it it’s unusual just cuz it’s got these this multi fitment on the end and on top of that it’s got an LED in it and it’s for little like awkward shaped fixings I did not expect to be buying a Makita box that we don’t already have we’ve obviously got the canver box which is here and I’m guessing that just slots over it and it’s pretty much a canel box but it’s tote definitely don’t have that I think we CH that in as well first Bosch hand tool I love the Bosch professional hand tools they have done it right they’ve got a very small range of hand tools hopefully they expand it but things they’ve released are really really good right so I think we found all of the quirky stuff in Obi or Obi I think it’s actually pronounced got five cool interesting tools we’ve got the old Weir F in a bag tool toots we’ve got the Makita toe and the foam as well and we’ve got this thing biffer roll so I can have that as a bit of a snack now let’s get it all back to the UK and then we can have a look at it all Curry ver and I’m uh brat ver now if you’ve never had cury vers you’re missing out so basically you end up with a sausage sliced into like inch pieces load of curry sauce on it load of paprika that is banging 7 out of 10 so I’m back in the UK and what a great trip to Obi there was loads of really cool stuff there a lot of it i’ seen before but they had a huge variety and a much broader range of stuff than you’d find in any hardware store over here in the UK and I do love a trip around a foreign Hardware tool store cuz you just never know what you’re going to find and I think we found some Beauties starting with the wearer tool toot tool tutor I call it fart bag if you’re watching this from Germany cuz this has got a German flag in the thumbnail a toot over here would be potentially a fart not many call it that but what else is a toot so we got six of these and it took every bit of willpower in me not to open one of these and have a look because as soon as you have a mystery bag you just want to open it up and have a look don’t you and I can tell you we’ve got five unopened that’s it’s a proud moment for me the fact that I didn’t open open any of these now we’re only opening one I have had a squeeze of them all and I do feel like they’re similar if not the same I’ve got an idea I think I can feel a bottle opener in one of them I can feel a couple of other shapes maybe a stubie screwdriver I’m not quite sure feels like there’s two or three items in it so we’re going to open one and then five are being given away as usual we do really simple giveaways all you have to do is drop a comment so let’s get one open open it open it open it open it yourself and there we go that’s a Nifty little set I’m hoping there’s some bits in this right so I’m pretty sure now seing the colors I’d assume they’re all the same that’s pretty cool I thought that was going to be like a a thin piece of Steel that’s folded but actually that’s a molding that’s solid steel all the way through that so it’s quite chunky and that’s their classic screwdriver handle we’ve got a little Phillips screwdriver and then a stubby with bits in the handle so what was that that was0 that’s £18 I think that’s pretty good I mean one of those alone with bits in the handle is going to be around £18 right so that on Amazon right now is £20 29 that exact it item you can get a ratcheting one for 35 so that’s £230 we’re already in Profit just off the back of that so if I type in we a bottle opener we’re looking at £150 for that on Amazon and then let’s have a look how much the little screwdriver is we may as well fiver 2030 £150 that was £ 3180 and a fiver £ 3680 and we paid 18 quid so I think that PR pretty good value a bargain is a bargain Robin and I think that’s a pretty cool little setup there and obviously it’s not bad value it’s pretty much half price we paid £ 18 quid £36 worth of retail stuff and we’ve got five of them so it’s a pretty nifty giveaway if you want one you know what to do I’ll put that over there we’ll call that sixth on the list what’s five on the list well let me show you so fifth on the list of our top five quirkiest tools is Zol stock now I’ve looked at Z stocks before and if you don’t know what a soul stock is it’s German for inch stick now ironically not many of them are in inches this one’s metric and it’s a 2 m folding ruler I love them there’s just something really satisfying about the mechanism the quality of them and the fact that in Germany these are more common than tape measures they’re in all the different tool kits and this one is particularly interesting because it’s a full aluminium with kind of brass folding Parts all of the ones I’ve seen before are either plastic or wood so pretty nifty in itself that it’s a folding ruler I think pretty quirky and you’ve got to include this in the German tools video and on top of that it’s metal which makes it pretty special and I didn’t stop there I found the last Obi branded Z stock in the store literally I love to get them with the store brands on it’s quite a common thing that the different tool Brands will have their own branded Z stock so I got the last large one and I managed to find a bunch of the smaller ones too so we got five and I thought I best get these just in case those tool fart bag things ended up being a bit dodgy so I thought we’d bulk it up a little bit with a folding ruler to go with each one so we did pick up five little folding rulers to go with those just to round out that little giveaway there and I’ve got one for our little collection too how long is this it’s a meter they’re just so Nifty and obviously they don’t take up any space they’re really kind of easy addition to a little compact tool kit and it’s solid as soon as you say folding you think it’s not going to be accurate or it’s not going to be very solid but even this one in plastic it really is and it’s a cool little branded item from Obie but guess what we already have one a shadow foam branded Z stock with my collection growing ever stronger and I love these things I think they’re such a novel tool and it’s fascinating to see how they’re still regularly used in Germany by all the the different trades people and how popular they still are and that’s why I wanted one so I thought it was about time we added one to the website so if you want classically named silly willly now I think this tops the universal Winkle so last time we went German tool shopping one of my favorites was the universal Winkle a tool every toolbox should have but this does top it the old silly willly by wasn’t and essentially this is like a silicon smoothing tool it all folds into itself to be fair let’s let’s take it off the packet I mean there’s loads of these isn’t they’re silicon smoothing tools usually they’re a little square with like four profiled corners this is pretty nifty because you can just have the one that you want and you’ve kind of got a little bit more purchase on it it’s a little bit easier to grip hold of than the weird little square let me know if you were smoothing out silicon would you give that a go cuz to me I usually use my thumb but I do know that that’s not the best you know I’ve never considered using a silly to smooth out silicon so that is fourth on the list so that brings us to number three on the list this one is genuinely an interesting quirky tool so NWS if you don’t know is a really high quality German manufacturer of pliers and they do have screwdrivers I actually have a pair of NWS pliers which I’ve had for a long time and I’ve always really rated them they’re um made in Solen in Germany and Solen is like a town where they make a lot of different steel items mainly knives I think but yeah solid item always like the pliers anyway and then I saw this this is called the e detector it might be available in the UK I’m not sure we might do a little bit of searching if it is we’ll put a link below but essentially this is a volt stick that attaches to your pliers which basically removes a tool don’t it it’s turning a plier or a snip into a multi-tool which is removing one item from your tool belt and look how small it is didn’t even notice that small to be fair in the Box it’s quite a big box for such a small little unit but essentially these NWS pliers have got this little nib literally just pushes on there we go so it needs a bit of force but when it’s on that’s like a really positive click so there we go if I pull a little battery protector out there we go try it on a cable here’s a power cable it doesn’t beep when it sees power turns the light off but it is detecting power and look how flipping small it is tiny little thing it’s going on your pliers or obviously I’ve got it on pliers that’s all I’ve got from NWS but if you’ve got it on Snips just before you’re about to cut that cable or maybe your cable sheares you could just give it a double check now obviously you’d be hoping you’ve already checked tested for dead but if you just ever have that thought in the back of your mind or check it one more time that is quirky that is a genuinely Nifty little product I’m happy I’ve got it that is flipping sick so that is third on the list let me show you the second item and on to number two now this one is a belter I really like this could have made it into number one to be fair but this is the Lu tools which is OB or Obi I’m not quite sure I’m going to call it Obi ob’s kind of own brand tool and it is one one of these kind of multi fittings for putting in kind of it shows here like an ihawk basically use it as a multi nut spinner all different sizes so they’re quite common I’ve never seen one with an LED torch built in so let’s get it open and have a look at it so there we go first impressions that’s a heavy little tool feels quite solid let’s see if we can turn it on how bright is it there you go so if you’re putting in Hook and eyes high up in Corners you’re doing bits and Bobs that is pretty awesome it’s lighting up exactly where you’re working it’s Universal it’s nice and solid and that was pretty cheap put the price on screen that cuz I can’t remember what I paid for that it wasn’t very much six quid for that that was a flipping best D of the day that should have been number one right that is number two let’s have a look at number one so that brings us to number one which oh there’s another item in here the Biffy roll this took a fair bit of self-d discipline not eating this straight out the gate when I walked out the store so it’s some sort of uh pepperoni in a kind of bread roll or something let’s have a look at this it’s packed it’s the exact same material as a pepperoni except for it’s much wider so naturally smoked let’s give this a go it smells like a pepperoni it doesn’t seem very appetizing it’s not my sort of thing to be honest well I can tell you I won’t be rushing back for another one I tell you that much that is as dry as sticks that I wonder how long ago they made that bread it tastes exactly what you would think it’s a pepperoni in old bread wonder how popular that is the old Biffy or kind of looks like byi doesn’t it byi like Wi-Fi I don’t think I’ll have another bite of that the bii roll let me know do you eat these in Germany do you have to get used to them maybe I need a fresh one from a supermarket rather than a hardware store but yeah that’s a byi roll let’s talk at number one so number one is something I nearly walked past because to be fair at the time I was quite distracted by I don’t know if he was a fan of the channel a German chat he spoke about as much English as I spoke German came over to ask me about something he led me over and I think he was asking for my opinion on some sort of own brand drill so uh I did my best I give it a look over I looked at the kit and I said something along the lines of what I meant to to say was it’s okay and it’s not expensive but I think I said that’s is Nick trck which is it’s not sad he seemed to be happy with me saying it wasn’t sad and he said oh okay and he he went off with his happy happy old drill but uh yeah if you’re watching the channel let me know what you actually asking put it in German in the comments below and then I can translate it and then I can actually answer your question so after that short conversation with the German Hardware Enthusiast who needed some advice I found this which to the naked eye I thought it was some sort of take measure $7.99 EOS but look at this 20 screwdriver bits in one happy little belt clip you put that like that and you’re just Off to the Races aren’t you that is pretty cool you’ve got your drill you’re working away you need a new screwdriver bit bang you got old 20 in this lovely little like rubber strap thing and literally every time you press it even though there’s a fair bit of weight to that pulls it straight back in it’s like a fidget toy and an actual clever Nifty quirky tool this is the exact reason why I go looking around these kind of foreign Hardware tool shops because every country is kind of innovated in a slightly different way and now guarantee this is made in China I can even see it says made in PRC but I’ve never seen this in the UK and to be fair I’ve been all around the states and I didn’t see this in the states either and I have a pretty good eye for tools so I’m always on the lookout for Nifty stuff anything different anything I’ve not seen before and that was truly novel have you seen this let me know in the comments bonus is something I didn’t think I’d be seeing in a long time and that is a new Makita box now to be fair it’s not a new Makita box I’ve had a look and this has been around for some time I’ve just never come across it now it looks very similar and I thought it was the can lever box to be fair in the shop but it is just a tool tote but it does slot onto the cansas lever box so something a bit different and it’s a box we don’t have inserts for on the website and I do feel there’s a good opportunity for totes like this CU they do use them a lot in Germany you can literally have all your tools if we have foone in it that is stood up your whole tool kit be in that one little thing which I quite like so that was nice it’s also got the clicks on the side so you can attach it to another tote or to the cancel eever box and it can attach so that was quite cool we’ll make some inserts for that we’ll get them on the website and then this is something you don’t see in the wild very often and that is competitor foam inserts I’ve picked up a couple over the years and you know I don’t think they you see them very often because they’re not very good I don’t know who’s really buying them so that was 23 quid £250 £23 and what have we got there we’ve got a piece of egg crate foam with a bit of sticky back plastic on it to go in the lid of a Mac Pack and then we have a mac oh no I thought it was pick and pluck foam this is actually just I’m guessing two battery cutouts this is more like upholstery foam really it’s what you’d have in a cushion but usually when it’s gray like this it means it’s cheaper than a Polster phone it’s not fire retardant so it’s some real cheaper chip stuff and I call it landfill fodder because it’s sadly you can’t do anything with it once it’s turned into polyurethane foam it can never be anything else it’s not very good what are you doing with that you’ve got two battery cutouts can you even get a drill in there goodness knows what that is that’s the Makita Mac Pack insert set for £ 2350 for the same price you’d get 230 M Shadow foam inserts in any color and you can literally cut and shape them however you want they’re going to last you a lifetime and they’re far more sustainable cuz polyethylene can be recycled the exact same as any plastic bottle it can be literally melted down turned into anything else it’s 100% pure polyethylene so it’s a win-win going for shadow foam and it’s cheaper that’s the the KE foam and we’ve got the Makita tote so let’s make a couple of inserts for this some rectangle foam we can cut all of that in there and I can give you a quick demo on how the shadow foam works right so I’ve cut two inserts down to size I love it when it’s a dead simple rectangle cuz I can just measure it literally cut a nice Square out of a medium sheet out of an offcut out of whatever I’ve got I’ve got two pieces here that slot straight into the both sides of the tote so all I’ve got to do now is do a layout and then I’ll show you how to cut it all [Music] is that the first real time layout we’ve ever done probably but that is the layout I’m pretty happy with that we got the Obi logo face up all the items that I got all the quirky tools are in the foam all I’m going to need now is one of our basic cutting kits it’s got everything you need in it to cut the foam including the most important thing which is the shadow foam branded anti- cut gloves I always wear an anti- cut glove on my left hand that is the hand that holds the items and then I use one of our scalpel with a fresh sharp scalpel blade on it that’s dead easy we got loads of videos now on how to put the scalpel on we’ll link our latest video about the shadow foam cutting process here the hints and tips it’s a great video it’s all of the little tricks of the trade that I’ve kind of put together over 12 years of cutting and shaping Shadow foam you can go and watch that if you want to see the inside scoop on how to do this but I’ll give you the quick Whistle Stop Tour all you have to do is place the item where you want it to go cut around it with a sharp scalpel you’re using the scalpel like a pencil and just Trace cutting around the item at this stage it doesn’t matter how deep you go you just want to make sure you’re holding the scalpel at 90° to the foam perpendicular once you’ve gone all the way around you remove the item out of the way you then go back and you make this cut deeper and you make sure you’ve gone all the way around you don’t want to have it joined on the corners so we’re cutting all the way down and here that zull stock is about 12 mil deep so I’m cutting past that I’m cutting down to about 20 mil into the foam once I’ve cut all the way around all you do then is take one of your fingers I take my strongest index finger push it down the gap of the cut you’ve made and then pull the phone back towards you and you can see you literally chasing it along and as quick as that that’s our first item done and there we go let me do the rest of [Music] them there we go stop the clock I think that was pretty quick all 10 items cut into foam in a world record Pace I reckon and there it is all done doesn’t take much all you need is some basic tools a little bit of time and a little bit of hair to make sure you capture the profiles really well and then you just whiz out the foam and you can get things nice and organized now doubt in your toolbox you can have three Z stocks and a silly willy like we’ve got in here but it shows how it works so thank you very much for watching the video make   1. Normally they aren’t called Zollstock anymore. There are still people calling them like that but it is either Meterstab(Meter = metric measurement unit and stab = another word for stock) or the more general term would be Gliedermaßstab(Glieder = limbs and maß = another word for measurements and again stab)

  2. about the bifi roll: you pronounce it like: beefy, because its made out of beef. greentings from germany 😉 BTW: better product from them is called "carazza" (pocket pizza) – love it!

  3. hilarious how many people think this overprized garbage in those Tolltüten is worth the cash, if you catch your spending 20-30 bucks on such toy tools you better seek help

  4. The best thing with Gliedermaßstab/Zollstock that even most people won`t recognize is: You can also do quick measurements of common angles (15 to 75 degress in increments of 15 degrees) with it. Many Gliedermaßstäbe also have markings for that on it!

  5. Pronounce the „g“ in finger the same way you pronounced „Solingen“ to get the feel of how i felt when you said it 😂 It’s actually pronounced the way it is in finger. Pretty cool city to visit if someone is interested in Metalwork
