I reached out to Canyon support in the chat and they told me that it was supplied by Shimano to protect the frame from the FD, but wasn’t needed on the bike I had, so they just threw it into the bag

Before you install a shimano front derailleur on your bike, you attach the metal pad onto the frame. There is a small adjustment grub screw on the derailleur that you screw into the derailleur when you are setting up the alignment of the derailleur.
The adjustment grub screw when screwed in by the correct amount will touch the pad and help give support to the front derailleur during its operation. If you didn’t attach the metal pad to your frame, particularly if the frame is carbon, then the front derailleur could potentially damage the frame.
If the front derailleur mount on your frame is metal and is bolted on or rivetted to the frame, then the adjustment grub screw on the front derailleur will touch that instead and the pad is not needed on the frame.
