Had fun with this totally car-less 4-day trip across Wisconsin, 2/3rd on trail. Red = train, blue = bike. The route could easily be extended (mostly on-trail) to Chicago. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a logistically simple tour in the upper Midwest.

Very cool. What kind of riding did you do on the other 1/3 to keep it carless?
Love it! I have been doing car-free tours along the CA coast from where I live near Sacramento for a few years now. It’s great to be able to ride out from my front door, use public transportation/Amtrak to get to the start of the tour, and back to a point where I can ride back to my front door, without having to drive or leave my car somewhere. Very satisfying!

I’ve done this exact route, and it is pretty great. When I was on the train near La Crosse, I could see the bike trail from the train, and then vice versa in Sparta.
My camping spots were West Salem (Veterans Memorial Campground), Elroy (Elroy Walk-In Campground), Lodi (some motel?) and Lake Mills (Sandhill Station).
