Commuting around 8-13 miles across a variety of terrains (except dirt paths). Which bike is better? I want to focus on speed, but also safety (there's some construction on some roads).

Front suspension forks like that DS make the bike heavy and slow, but comfortable. If you care about speed or weight you want a rigid fork like the verve.
