Recently I was able to convince my 11 year old son he should learn to ride a bike. Prior to this he flat refused. So I bought this bike for him and he’s doing great and really loves it. For that I’m thankful. His only complaint is he says the brake is too hard to pull to stop well. I don’t think it’s the bike as I can lock it up. His problem is grip strength. Are there longer brake levers I could buy to help with leverage for him or something else that would make it easier?

There are ways to adjust the spring tension. I’d recommend watching a video on adjusting the spring tension on u-brakes. You’ll basically need an Allen wrench for the brakes in the back of the bike, and a wrench to fit around the spring caps. Loosen with the Allen wrench, and turn the spring cap to tighten and loosen, then tighten the Allen wrench again when you get the tension how you want it.

Again, google how to adjust the brake tension on bmx u-brakes and watch a video. It’s much easier to understand when you have visuals. This is an easy adjustment.

EDIT: If you adjust the tension and he’s still complaining about the brakes, you might want to try swapping to clear (softer) brake pads to increase the stopping power.
