I would say go for straps. Toe clips surely look more vintage especially with steel bikes but it’s just not as good as straps. I have both system on my njs and skream and straps are simply better in terms of holding your foot securely (at least I found straps better even though I am using mks pedal + mks toe clip + mks fit alpha). I also found it easier for me to skid with straps than with toe clips. And the worst is that cage scuffed shoes and your foot if you are wearing shoes that are thin.

I can’t tell why your straps come loose after every ride tho. If it is a double Velcro (it’s like sandwiching the straps with two sets of Velcro so it barely moves), I don’t think it comes loose that easily and probably worth for a double check.

Tho it’s worth noting that I suspect using toe clips might cause serious toe overlap issues. With straps you can kinda bypass the issue by putting your foot a little bit further away from the front wheel, but with toe clips you will be annoyed by the issue a lot.

Having used both,I prefer toe clips/cages for 3 reasons:

    1) I like my foot retention snug around my foot. So I’ll slide into my cages and tug the strap tight before riding. Can’t do this with most straps.

    2) With straps I tend to inch my foot more and more forward until inevitably I’m over-extending my ankle and wind up hurting my Achilles tendon. User error? Maybe, but with properly sized cages I simply don’t have to worry about this.

    3) This ties into reason number 1, but having easily adjustable foot retention means I can wear whatever shoes I want and have a good fit with my pedals.
