Urban Zero marks the world’s first attempt to transform an urban neighborhood (Duisburg-Ruhrort) into complete environmental neutrality in just a few years (by 2029). In this context, environmental neutrality means recording all potential environmental impacts, e.g. emissions and resource consumption of the neighborhood, that can be measured using life cycle assessment methods, reducing them as much as possible, and compensating for them continuously in their unavoidable portions in the neighborhood area. The project addresses the challenge that cities make up only three percent of the earth’s terrestrial surface but consume two thirds of the energy used – with significant impact on global environmental degradation incl. climate change and decline of biodiversity that threaten vital livelihoods. If successful, Urban Zero can become a role model for sustainable urbanity. /// Tandem: Peter Weidig (Head of Holding Services, Franz Haniel & Cie. GmbH) and Katrin Witthaus (Project Lead Project Development, GEBAG Duisburger Baugesellschaft mbH)

RISE Cities Fellowship is a hybrid program with a group of 24 leaders from 12 European cities working in tandems of one civil servant and one project leader to develop ideas and solutions for their cities through immersive sessions, masterclasses, online coaching and mentoring by outstanding urban experts and members of the BMW Foundation Responsible Leaders Network. The RISE Cities Fellowship Program was launched in 2022. We are happy to introduce the second edition of the program.

The fellowship is part of the BMW Foundation RISE Cities program, working since 2019 on identifying urban challenges and facilitating mutual learning to support the development of solutions in local ecosystems.

RISE Cities Fellowship program was designed in collaboration with experienced advisors like GEHL and Urban Impact Agency and is supported by our broader network of organizations and partners for the nomination process, thematic inputs, and coaching.
